I purchased the Ultimate 3 mode ( white ) when it dropped to around $30. Mostly because it came with a month of Game Pass Ultimate. Mine stopped working with my series x within a week. The usb c port is funky. Still works fine in Bluetooth and usb dongle modes. This special edition is the only one that may get me to bite

It's nice that this one is wireless compatible with everything. I could totally see a wired controller using a plain USB c port that isn't recessed or anything eventually having issues.
A common complaint (depending on your preferences) of 8BitDo Xbox style controllers is that they are more narrow which causes more of an angle at the wrists. Xbox controllers tend to be more flared. I just bought the wired ones from a recent deal. Still, this is a great, wireless controller from what I've heard.
Never buying 8bitdo controllers again. Installed their software, firmware updated, all it can do is barely navigate windows using the d-pad when connected with bluetooth. Does not work with games. Official Xbox controllers do. Buyer beware.

I have the original 8BitDo Ultimate with ALPS joysticks and I agree with the complaints on ergonomics.
I ended up getting the GameSir Nova Lite ($20 Cyber Monday 2024) and GameSir Super Nova ($30 Best Buy a week or so ago) which I like much better. The Nova Lite came with a hard shell case which makes it super handy for travel.
This isn't exactly the Ultimate 1. Also, the Ultimate 2 doesn't work with Xbox.
You buy this Ultimate 3-mode if you want wireless Xbox support with hall effect joysticks. Otherwise, there are other options available.
i see, so the this one beats the current 50 dollar Ultimate 2 really only in the perspective that it support xbox and has a 3.5mm audio jack? it looks the ultimate 2 has superior joystick (TMR) than this. so if you are not caring about the "rare 40th anniversary" and xbox compatibility, this looks like a downgrade from the cheaper (and use to be much cheaper) ultimate 2?

Yup, better to get the Ultimate 2 if you don't need Xbox support. If you want to save a few more bucks and don't mind the design, the Ultimate 2 Wuchang version is just $40.
Gotta love MS celebrating Rare's 40th by basically killing off what remained of the studio during their purge everything that's not AI Armageddon a few months back.

I got one of these when it dropped to $61 a while back. It looks really cool as a display piece. The light under the dock glows the same shade of yellow as the details on the controller, whereas my black Ultimate 2's dock glows white.
I also have a wired 8bitdo Xbox controller that's the same shape. I haven't experienced it with this Rare controller yet, but with the wired one, I agree with the other comments that mention poor ergonomics. An OEM Xbox controller just feels better, though this one at least has more weight to it and feels less cheap than the wired one.
So for me it's a 2P controller that stays on the shelf most of the time. On the rare (ha) occasions where my daughter wants to play Xbox with me, she uses this, since she thinks it looks awesome.

The Ultimate 2 has TMR joysticks iirc. No stick drift like hall effect while being almost as low power as potentiometer-based ones.

so why buy the ultimate 1 when 2 is available for the same?
