The site says this item is returned often. If you don't mind spending the money for a good one, this is the one I recommend. I've used it for years, although I could swear I paid around $12. The medium size will be fine up to a Labrador sized dog. The larger one is only a dollar more. https://www.amazon.com/Safari-Sel...r=8-1&th=1
I prefer the ones like this that don't have the little balls on the tips of the tines. I have a Siberian Husky and it works on her.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm looking at getting a new brush to help with pugs.

I bought one of these and it really didn't help with my cats. But I have long-haired Russian Siberians. It did nothing to brush them out. I'll paste here the one that I bought that's been a miracle for me. I've never found a brush to work the way this one does. But again it's for my long haired cats so it might be different if your cats are short hair. This one is about $13. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BZZC5...tle_8&th=1

Thanks OP! Got one. I had another one like this but it did not have the smoother tips. I felt it was more for a cat. This one should work out fine and not irritate my dogs skin.

I think there is a small size. The medium might be too large for a pug.

That's a rake. They are made for the undercoat. If you want a nice slicker that will work to finish the job, try this in small. It doesn't have those little balls on the tips, so it works better.: https://www.amazon.com/Safari-Sel...r=8-1&th=1

This one is supposedly for cats. I doubt there's any difference

I saw that note too, but the reviews don't seem to say the same message and it definitely doesn't tie to my experience of using it for the last 8 months since we adopted our boy. I posted this as I picked up two spares as I already have one of these and use it daily with our long-haired husky, it has removed literally buckets of underhair from our canine equivalent of PigPen! I'm sure this wouldn't work for all breeds and it took us a little while after we adopted him last year to find one that worked, but 'fur' us it works well. YMMV for sure but at the current price it's worth a shot.

As our husky has a double coat, our groomer warned us off anything that had an actual blade as they tend to both remove the undercoat (good) but also cut the guard hairs (bad). Maybe it's just the type of coat our 'yak' has, but this seems to work well.
