What do you guys use for a photo server? Immich seems great but I'm not ready to move onto a Docker solution. Plex Photos seems to be discontinued and it also does not allow for photo downloads to your device.

Immich is the way to go. What's your hesitancy in moving to Docker?

I understand but that doesn't help anyone here u less we have comparison or why they make the switch. Initially it was hard drive requirement but they backtracked on that.

I got a DXP4800 last year to replace a Synology DS1520+ on my normal 5-year schedule. I basically just use it as fault-tolerant personal local storage with some light Google Drive and mobile device sync. I used to do some remote access with Synology, but decided to drop it from my setup this time (nothing to do with UGREEN, it's just no longer a need).

For my use cases, the DXP4800 is functionally identical to the three Synology NASs I've used. A year ago, the OS (a blatant Synology clone) did everything I needed, but it was a lot jankier. With each update, it's gotten better. Still not as polished as Synology, but it's friendly enough that anyone with a general idea of what they want can get things set up. I will note that I haven't experienced a drive failure yet, so I haven't been able to truly test the fault tolerance.

I primarily jumped the Synology ship because of their intent to limit drive compatibility. They eventually walked it back for now, but it's obviously a goal of theirs, and that's enough to eliminate them for me. If people have concerns about UGREEN's OS security or functionality, the guides/forum posts I've read indicate it's pretty easy to install other OSs, and it doesn't void the warranty (though UGREEN obviously won't support/troubleshoot those OSs on a software level).

As always: you can definitely build a cheaper setup (especially if you have old hardware lying around), but the extra cost of a turn-key NAS is worth the convenience, simplicity, and form factor benefits for a lot of people, including me. Different people have different uses and priorities, and that's fine.

This is literally what I did.

You can use Cloud Sync on Synology to connect to WebDAV on UGREEN.

I set the schedule on Synology side and it just logs in and pushes/pulls throughout the night.
