PhotoSync app. Been around for over a decade. On WiFi + charging at 2:00am = trigger backup to share (and about 25 other cloud locations, should you choose).
I understand but that doesn't help anyone here u less we have comparison or why they make the switch. Initially it was hard drive requirement but they backtracked on that.
SSD cache drive limit was never backtracked. Keep that in mind.

In many models, there are 2 nvme SSD slots in addition to HDD drive bays. You cand set the nvme SSDs as cache drives and store some frequently used files for faster access. Any new builds will require using Synology brand SSDs for cache. Old builds can be grandfathered in when migrating to new hardware with restrictions, but no upgrades or modifications allowed.

I found some videos of some apps like photos app comparison but they are old.
I'm not clear on how this is better than just owning a desktop computer.
When you say owning a desktop, you mean your main desktop, your power rig, the one with the hefty GPU in it that you play 4k games at 100fps on type of desktop? Well as someone says there's a power consideration, I'm not sure about you but I don't leave my desktop on all the time. I used to run a Plex server off of my desktop, and it always came down to "can you turn your computer on I want to watch something", with a NAS you have 24-7 access without needing your desktop on.
Now if you mean just an older computer like one of the replies says, then again, power consumption, also a much smaller form factor, also there are people believe it or not that want an out of the box solution without having to do much of anything to get it working right away. I could have used an old computer, lord knows I have plenty of them sitting around that I'd almost classify as eWaste right now, but I didn't want to have to think too hard about getting something going, but I'm sure there would be extra cost in converting one of them over. I like my DXP4800 plus, it was at a price point I could swallow, and threw in some WD Reds and didn't need too much configuration to get them going.
But honestly, if you need someone to convince you that a NAS is better than a desktop, you probably don't need/want a NAS anyways.

Well I don't know about you, but I don't leave my main rig on 24/7, used to have a Plex server on it but too many times my wife would tell me "turn the computer on, I want to watch a movie" that got old fast. Plus it's compact, out of the way on a shelf, and I don't have to think too much into it.
Sure I could have used an old computer to turn into a NAS, and it very easily could have been comparable in what it could do, but it would have been some level of effort to get it there, and it would have been bulky, maybe loud, and use a lot more power I'm guessing. But the real answer, I wanted something out of the box without me having to think too deeply into getting it going. i.e. just plug it in, slide in some drives, and I'm good to go.
That said, if you're looking for convincing as to why you would need/want a NAS over using your desktop, then you probably don't really need/want a NAS.

Bought a UGREEN NASync DXP2800 for $289 last month. What's the difference between the BH2300 and the DXP2800?
Hardware is the biggest difference. the 2800 has an Intel CPU, more RAM, a faster LAN port (assuming you have a 2.5Gbe router to take advantage of it), now your use case may not need any of those hardware advantages, in which case cheaper is better, especially if you're going to use it strictly as a storage device without it doing much of anything with what you put on it.
What do you guys use for a photo server? Immich seems great but I'm not ready to move onto a Docker solution. Plex Photos seems to be discontinued and it also does not allow for photo downloads to your device.
I publish my photos on OF, so public storage and get paid to see my intimate moments.

There is a script that deals with that quickly and easily. Some people may be hesitant to have to use a script, but it has worked really well for me and I don't even worry about synologies drive limitations anymore for hard drives or nvmes.

Immich is the way to go. What's your hesitancy in moving to Docker?
I use Immich on my Mac Mini and I love it. Here is what I have done- I have Immich saving it to one external SSD and then another SSD rsync data between them.

The problem is that these are still too expensive for the hardware given and if you are locked into UGreen's ecosystem they can take you and your data wherever they want it. As a current but eventually ex-customer of Synology ask me how I know.
