Small note: the DS925+ from B&H Photo is not free shipping, it's $512 + ~$12 for shipping.

UGREEN has taken over. More functionality for the price and with less shady corporate decisions. Just Google Synology. They have lost a lot of love from the NAS community. I just bought a UGREEN 4800 Pro.

What size are you considering? I want to start with 2 drives and no raid, just mirror sync so I have access to both drives if one dies, I don't see the benefit or raid for just file storage since I won't be running any high demanding software. I might eventually add NVR 1 more drive, and 1 more drive for plex, and get a 2-drive version for only the important files with a sync off-site.
Synology still does sync over internet to another synology, right?

My main usage will be photos and videos, for Plex it will not require transcoding, since most of my files are really old mp4 rips of my DVDs, and I got 2.5gbps internet, so it's another thing to consider if anyone is looking to access over internet.

Yeah I think that extends thru 2027. In my previous reply I mentioned the WD 12tb nas pro is $305 at Amazon. Only $55 more than the Black Friday deals they had so while it's more, it's something we may have to get used to. Maybe wait for BF and see if they drop the price but that's if they even have stock by then. AI and cloud has just increased the supply and demand of these drives

The price difference between the DS425+ and DS925+ is about $100, and I understand that the DS925+ is the more capable unit. For basic home use — such as backing up photos and videos from phones and cameras, file sharing and backups for home PCs, and possibly using VPN for remote access — it sounds like the DS425+ might be sufficient. I won't be using Plex (or would use another player to handle decoding), and I won't be running any Docker containers or VMs.

Given this use case, is the DS425+ good enough? It would be great to save the extra $100 for disks if the performance difference isn't worth it for my situation.

Yes. And DS425+ is more capable if you want to host plex on your NAS as J4125 has a iGPU whereas V1500B does not

Just remember, if you are going to need additional ram, and why pay almost same for 425+ and Ram because advanced functionality of the synology photos will require 4GB ram, and 425+ comes with 2GB ram. If you need to get object detection, it requires 4GB ram.

You can read above, 925+ also seems to have faster read/write speeds, USB-C port, and it looks like it has kensington port if you plan to secure this, though I don't know if you can lock the drives? For $100, 925+ seems like a good way to go.

Now, drives.. ugh those prices!

Outdated cpu and no GPU, so you're mostly paying for the OS.
This! Their "No third party hard drives" decision that they then had to walk back after sales plummeted was nothing more than a cash grab that blew up in their face. Damage has been done. For the money, I would rather buy a Ugreen or any of the many other units out there now and run Xpenology (DSM straight rip off) or TrueNAS, etc. on the device.

The most important differences IMHO besides the CPU are:
925+ has 4GB of ECC memory upgradeable to 32GB.
425+ has 2GB of non-ECC soldered on with a free slot to add another 4GB for a max of 6GB.
If it doesn't have ECC memory it's a nonstarter for a lot of people.

925+ has two 2.5GbE ports for a max throughput of 5GbE smb3 multi channel.
425+ has one 2.5GbE and one 1GbE port for a max throughput of 3.5GbE smb3 multi channel.
This is not that big a deal in my opinion depending on your network and what media you are putting inside this.

One last difference of note is the 925+ supports the DX525 expansion unit if you ever wanted to add 5 more drives in the future. That box does cost an extra $500 but it was on sale for $437 for Black Friday last year.

If you are using this as a local backup to your primary NAS as part of a 321 backup solution I would say the occasional pieces of lost/corrupt data due to non-ECC memory isn't as big of a deal.

Love my ugreen. Not using thei software at all, I'm running Proxmox with LXC containers for app my apps and file serving. Working great and luckily got it a year ago when 32gb of ram was under $100

This is the lowest I've seen it. I bought one last Black Friday for this price too. Good deal.

Yeah, HDD prices are nasty like all the rest. Haven't really shopped in a while, but the 14TB server part deal I got three years ago for $129 is now like $350 and also taxed now. Much cheaper to delete crap, lol.

No more hardware transcoding on these without a workaround, right? Using Jellyfin.

I am no NAS expert but just some casual cloud storage. My main goal was to not pay for overpriced Google Drive or Apple cloud. This solves that problem but you just need to compromise with speed. If you try to access data outside of your house, it's not going to be as fast or reliable as google or Apple cloud, let's just get it straight. I also messed up when trying to add a new external drive and required me to open a Synology support ticket to reset. I think it's a good investment overall . But with hard drive storage getting more expensive each day, feel like the ROI of running your own server may be lower now

What drives would you recommend for the 925+?
I've been running 5 Seagate Ironwolf NAS 8TB drives for over 4 years now with not a single issue in my 1520+. I use my NAS extensively too.

another recommendation for a ugreen, i bought a 8 bay ugreen last year before HDD prices jumped (bought 5 drives, wish I had bought 8!) and installed TrueNAS and SUPER happy with it. I still have a QNAP 4 bay server that is my NAS backup, with SyncThings automating backing up between the two devices (and a small portion gets backed up to google cloud, like documents and photos).

Ugreen hardware is great, no issues at all and I installed an extra 8GB RAM and an SSD (OS/cache) and disabled the built in SSD in case I ever want to revert back to default OS setup.

Hard drive prices are absolutely insane though, I paid $300/drive for 26TB drives a year ago and the exact same drives were $555 each a few weeks ago. Checking now they are "only" $520 on serverpartdeals, not even new refurb'd NAS drives! Can't wait for the AI bubble to burst and prices to go back to normal, if they ever do.

I have a DS 918+ that I recently swapped out my 4 8TB drives for 4 20 T drives, and I saved the 4 8TB drives for when I could house them in another NAS. I assume the 925+ would be a good idea? Can someone please advise?
