Just bought this, was really upset when I missed the black Friday deal and couldn't find this at the $512 price since then. Working great and definitely a huge upgrade from my ds213j 😂

Is this pretty much the lowest it goes?

That I've seen for the ds925+. I jumped on it.

My only issue now is the new NAS drives I'm trying to buy. I missed the black Friday deal cuz I was hoping cyber Monday was going to have the same deals if not better but as soon as midnight hit, all the BF deals were gone and everything was either full price or OOS. I had the drives and this ds925+ in my cart waiting for Cyber Monday.

Western digital is now under a contract to make their drives for enterprise thru 2027 so most of them are full price, way way over priced to people ripping others off or OOS.

What drives would you recommend for the 925+?

WD Pro NAS is what I've read are the best for home use. As mentioned, most of them are either over priced or OOS. I did find a 12tb at Amazon for $305 but they were as cheap as $250 on BF. I've heard Seagate iron wolf pro are also good and comparably priced but I personally have always used WD.

The price difference between the DS425+ and DS925+ is about $100, and I understand that the DS925+ is the more capable unit. For basic home use — such as backing up photos and videos from phones and cameras, file sharing and backups for home PCs, and possibly using VPN for remote access — it sounds like the DS425+ might be sufficient. I won't be using Plex (or would use another player to handle decoding), and I won't be running any Docker containers or VMs.

Given this use case, is the DS425+ good enough? It would be great to save the extra $100 for disks if the performance difference isn't worth it for my situation.

Outdated cpu and no GPU, so you're mostly paying for the OS.

UGREEN has taken over. More functionality for the price and with less shady corporate decisions. Just Google Synology. They have lost a lot of love from the NAS community. I just bought a UGREEN 4800 Pro.

I have seen Seagate IronWolf Pro 12 TB (7200 RPM) at $280 as well. Sucks what has happened to PC parts prices.

Yes. And DS425+ is more capable if you want to host plex on your NAS as J4125 has a iGPU whereas V1500B does not

I want to buy so badly but hard drive prices have sky rocketed. WD said they're sold out for 2026?

Yep, crazy. You'll pay way more for four drives than the damn NAS unit itself.
