The tradeoff between frost-free vs manual defrost isn't just money. Frost-free works by periodically raising the temp of the freezer to drive off the frost. If your goal is long-term storage, repeated raising and lowering of the temp of the freezer isn't ideal. It won't bring things into the unsafe temperature zone but it will promote non-spoil decline in quality e.g. freezer burn.

it is 6 feet long, so you can do one of those ice baths laying flat.

I have 2 21 cu. ft. freezers and they are usually full. I have 1/2 acre in garden and when it is is full swing I put gallons of tomato juice to cook my beans in. I have to also have a place to store cooked dog food I make which can take .33 to .25 of the space of one freezer. Freezers are a means to have your produce used instead of wasted. I have a third one that is empty for when one of them dies. I also can 50-70 quarts of my fruit per year. I am single. Having cherries or peaches in the winter is something I always enjoy. Hope that helps.

I would rather have the standard freezer than the frost free. My standard freezers always last longer than my frost free. I do have a new frost free as a spare since I couldn't get a standard for that low a price. I just had my 1985 hotpoint standard freezer died last year. It was 40 years young. Of course the new stuff is not built to last that long. Whatever you do clean the motor and condenser every year with at least a vacuum cleaner. Good luck.
