You can't expand PEX-B, otherwise use the fittings as you wish as long as it fits.

Clamp vs ring crimp have different long term reliability, from what I read both pex a and b can use the clamp and crimp method, the ring crimp is more reliable. Will it pass inspection if you use pex a and crimp? Probably not. Will it leak? Probably not.
Only pex a can be expanded. Ymmv

If the tubing has ASTM F2098 printed on it then stainless steel clamps can be used on it, whether it's PEX-A or PEX-B.

You can expand some PEX-B, but not all. You need to see if it supports the expansion ASTM #.
I prefer expansion and use a lot of expandable PEX-B in the barn for temp lines etc as it's much cheaper than PEX-A.

From every plumber I've hired over the last several years, they've used stainless steel clamps. I have this Ryobi tool, and it works well. The only downside is that it's rather large if you're doing something underneath a house. I also have a smaller hand tool.

the manual crimpers are just fine if you're not in the business. Not hard to use or slow. Can't see a general diy'er really needing another bulky tool that doesn't really save you a ton of work for very occasional use. Not like a sawzall or impact driver. Plus there's some feel involved, if you just go after it full bore, you break most every one. But I've never used this tool, maybe that feel is engineered in. just sayin'

If you are on the fence and think you'll get by with a hand tool I'd recommend not and buying this. I had a water softener to install and maybe 10-15 crimps. It was such a pain with the hand tool trying to hold stuff together with one hand, crimp it with my other hand and the tool pushing against my chest. Or using both hands on the hand tool and pray I didn't move the fitting at all while trying to crimp it. This would have been so much easier.

I disagree wholeheartedly, $60 more than hand tool is going save you so much time and/or frustration. Trying to stand on a ladder and use a hand tool to make a crimp in the ceiling of a basement while trying to not have the fitting move is a royal pain.

Better is subjective but there is one undeniable advantage a has over b. Pex a has no restriction. With b you are crimping the tube over a smaller diameter fitting. With a you are expanding the tube larger then it's normal diameter to constrict over the fitting which is the same diameter as the tube itself. I would say the vast majority of plumbers use b because it's cheaper, the crimping tools both manual and powered are much cheaper and if you are using the crimp rings or the pinch rings it's an easier system to use for retrofits. As for longevity I would say if done properly both are about the same.

Totally agree with this. This tool can be used one-handed and that's a huge deal when reaching behind a hot water heater or other location where it is difficult to bring both hands together. I bought mine in a similar deal a couple of years ago and have never regretted it. The manual tool that I regret buying when I first starting using PEX was something like $50 at Lowes if I remember so a net difference of $30 is a no-brainer. The only thing I will say is to make sure you get good name-branded crimps. The very cheap generic ones tend to slide down the pipe on their own. All of the good ones I have used (e.g. Sharkbite) are just barely able to fit on the PEX so they stay in place until crimped.
