When you activate this new phone purchase, there is an option to choose either port in a new number, or activate this phone for an existing number already serviced by TracFone. For the latter option, it disables my old SIM card and enables the number to run on this new phone + sim card combo, and adds an one whole year of service expiration date (e.g. from end of 2027 to end of 2028), in addition to the available credit units (minutes, SMS counts, data). And since I started to use this phone in early 2026, it will automatically unlock in early 2027.

Never swap sim from another phone. TracFone is very anal about attaching a SIM card to the phone it came in. You could lose service one day bc they consider SIM swap against their terms. To change phones, you need to activate a nEW BYOP SIM..

Unlock automatically after one whole year of active service, which means, depending on your luck, you may need to renew for at least one month after this initial one-year payment to see the phone unlocked. This may be a nuisance for new users. But for me, since I already have previous deals stacked on the same number and this purchase adds one year to the previous end of 2027 service expiration date, this is not an issue at all.

Thanks! How do you stack? Just redeem the coupon against the current account?

I added this to the previous thread, but if you're only interested in service, these phones have good trade-in value. Amazon itself will trade back the phone for $30 and I had an EcoATM quote for $20.

Go to "Activate" on Tracfone's site. Tell it you wish to activate a new phone purchased from Tracfone. Then, select the "keep my number" option and follow the prompts.

For anyone interested, looks like the 1-year plan costs $125. Barely over $10 a month. Nice!

You just take the SIM card from this phone back to the old phone. The phone number goes with the SIM card.

You can move between phones in a similar fashion. Go to "Activate", but instead you select "Bring My Own Device". Enter your old phone's information there and you're good. You can bounce around between unlocked devices AND Tracfone-locked IMEIs to your hearts content.

Is it a physical SIM or an eSIM? Was getting it for the service so thinking to just trade in the phone and keep service for emergency in a dumb phone

Guessing if you move to another phone; the locked phone timer stops?

It comes with a pre-installed physical SIM with associated service units for activation. The phone also supports eSIM which allows me to run an additional TracFone number. I have not tested if it could run a different service provider's number through eSIM.

Yes, this "reactivation" approach risks marking the new phone as inactive and making it not unlockable in the future. I've found in the past that moving the new SIM from this "new backup phone" to another phone, regardless of my "old phone" or a "new unlocked primary phone", didn't affect the activation status of the "new backup phone".

Thanks for the insight. Guess it's best for me to just keep the sim in the phone it came with and use that to avoid any complications with unlocking in the future.
