For maximum compatibility in terms of reaching peak speed, you'll want a USB 4 drive or enclosure.
I do believe prices will come down eventually, but most industry experts say fab capacity (both for RAM and flash/SSD storage) is consumed for years to come.

I think if you care that more sequential speed (rather than random writes) and you can take advantage of Gen 2 x 2, it's a decent discount from the prevailing recent prices. Presumably prices won't come down in the near future, but you never know. No one has a magic ball.
I think the reason for the discount might be the limitations: as others have stated, Gen 2 x 2 is being supplanted by newer interfaces.
