The previous price/deal was $1500 just a week ago, cheaper than the currently posted price, and certainly not $1649 as quoted above. How is this a deal and being thumbed up?

This is a good deal.

This specific spec is odd though. This is the base M5, which is fine, with one upgrade. But for the cost of one upgrade you'd benefit more from 16 to 24 Gb of RAM instead of 512 to 1 Tb of storage, simplify because many tasks that benefit from the additional storage also need RAM (e.g. Video work, gaming, local LLMs).

Off the top of my best usage would be photographer. Lightroom/Photoshop work great on 16 Gb and raw files can be huge. But a lot of photographers also do video work and while of course you can trivially do it on 16 Gb, scrubbing may benefit from a resolution reduction to avoid swap/lag.

I guess my point is: consider your goals and exact needs.

No WiFi 7 unlike MacBook Air or the MBPs with Pro/Max chips

I returned this to Apple Store yesterday. M5 MacBook Pro 16GB/1TB and got back my ~$500 extra.

Was able to pick up an open Box M4 MacBook Pro 16GB/512GB for $1030 from Microcenter.

To me, absolutely no difference between my two weeks of testing both. Literally a carbon copy. Unless you're marrying some local AI model, you'll probably not be able to justify the price difference.

I thought this was a weird upgrade too, but it turns out that it's now the base model 14" Pro. When they released the M5 Pro and M5 Max models, they discontinued the 512GB storage config and made 1TB the base model. You can see this for yourself on the Apple Store -- it doesn't offer the 512GB model anymore.

Nice find for an open box. The processor, RAM speed, and SSD speed are the major upgrade and for most people you will not notice. Not a significant upgrade from the M4. I found the space black version of the M5/16gb/1Tb for $1279 open box fair condition at Best Buy, YMMV. The SSD size is where for my use case I need the 1TB, especially external SSD have almost double in price compated to a year ago.
