Wish drive A and B floppy drives are also available. Got a bunch of those diskettes from father's home lately...
There is no such thing as an "A" floppy and a "B" floppy drive.
There were 5-1/4" and 3-1/2" floppy drives. (8" too if you want to go really old school.)

And even if you don't care about every using/playing the CD again, you can buy discs at Goodwill, etc. for <$1.00 and rip them for the digital version.

USB 2.0 mini usb to Usb a. that $50 retail is a joke. this is worth $8 I bought a cheap one from Amazon with usb 3 a and c. got a new mp3 player in the form of a moto stylus phone. Wanted to rip a cd. went to the library and ripped it on the spot to flac. feels like I stole it. Haven't tried it on Android
Considering 8x read speed is only like 11 MB/s and USB 2 supports 60, it's more than adequate for this purpose. It's not like USB A ports are that hard to come buy unless you're a MacBook user.

Also, you actually did steal that since the library still "owns" the copy of the disc you made. Just because you can copy something you borrow from the library doesn't mean you now legally own it. That goes for any media you borrow from the library: movies, games, etc.

USB supports speeds up to 60 MB/s, more like 40 MB/s in most real world applications, but 8x DVD speed is only about 10.5 MB/s. So even USB 2 is way more than enough here. Putting anything higher spec'd on this would be stupid.

I agree USB-C would be nice. But, I'd wager most people are using these with a desktop, most of which still have USB-A ports. And if not, it's just one cheap adapter away.

Of course, my friend. I was just saying in short, since those who knew already realized the dual drives in the old days, and A is 3.5" and B is 5.25". It's so common that you already picked out too 😉

What is this used for in 2026? I do still have my original copies of Diablo and Starcraft so maybe that is the way.
if you ask for a copy of your medical records like a CT scan or MRI they will give it to you on a physical CD. none of my computers these days have an optical drive.

tangential addendum - if you want to give another medical provider a copy of your records b/c your last doctor or diagnostic imaging biz stopped practicing, the new office will only accept them from a physical CD as USB drives can have viruses put on them. (yes - im aware most times you can just have the new office call the old office)

all this to say, im going to wait for one that support bluray too

i need to convert 50-60 CDs to mp3. is there a device/gadget available to accomplish this in a somewhat convenient/quick manner? i was thinking like a CD-changer that can accommodate 5-10 CDs at a time and automatically switch from cd to cd converting them. i'm guessing not but thought i would ask.

If you look at Amazon, it's not hard to find a drive that also supports Blu Ray (even writing to Blu Ray) for not too much more money. I have no idea about the quality, but for example there is this one that also functions as a USB hub and card reader for $35.99

Your library probably still has a good collection of DVD's. Once in a blue moon you might want to make a copy. On the other hand, they also have Blu-Ray discs. So you might want a DVD/Blu-Ray drive with recording ability -- though I have yet to find a reliable Blu-ray copy program.

Thank you for this. I like to get music CDs and rip them for high quality audio files. At first I felt old but then my 16 old neice and her friends are obsessed with CDs and have me burn them CDs every week, so if someone says "who is this for, old people?" it turns out they are the out of touch ones!!
