This Ryzen 5 6600H mini PC stands out as a strong budget box for home office work, emulation, light gaming, Proxmox, and media use, with performance well above N100 minis and enough muscle for multiple VMs or a desktop replacement. The dual M.2 layout and 16GB soldered DDR5 are the big draws, and the quad channel memory layout is even seen as a performance boost. Main cautions are the non upgradeable RAM, possible HDMI limits for 4K 120Hz use, and repeated reports of a dirty Windows image that should be wiped and reinstalled. A capable low cost pick if the fixed memory and setup hassle are acceptable.

Is there any chance, even if I install my own OS that these Temu PCs could reinstall a crypto miner / wallet drainer / snooping software based on the mb firmware or whatever

Doesn't appear to be soldered RAM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7...vfk&t=227s Edit: or maybe it is Dear buyer
Please note: The RAM is permanently soldered to the motherboard and cannot
be upgraded or replaced. Weird they woudl have 2 versions of the same PC though
Saw a different seller with the 16GB model and one with no memory. So 2 versions definitely exist.
edit: Either way, this listed deal wont ship to my address which is a bummer.

The malware would have to be loaded on the bios of the motherboard. It's feasible but unlikely on such inexpensive hardware. Wiping/reinstalling the OS in my opinion is enough from my perspective; but everyone has their own risk tolerance and may not feel comfortable buying these. There is a pretty big homelab community that uses these mini PCs in their homelab environment and you would hear about it pretty quickly if these were loaded with malware.

Sincere question: is that enough now days? I hear people speak of elements, baked-in, so to speak, into the hardware components, that are reintegrated into any new OS install. Or maybe that has to do with the Windows license and nothing else. Please correct me if I'm wrong, for I admittedly do not know. I'm attempting to separate hearsay from reality. Thanks.
Ignore anyone arguing that reformatting is enough, they either don't understand or are responding defensively. UEFI bootkits, DMA attacks (usually hidden pci-e devices), and other firmware-based attacks are all persistent, no matter what method you use to erase the disk. There is zero way to confirm security on these, but you can take steps beyond re-imaging using UEFI malware scanners like Velociraptor, or if you want to deep dive dumping firmware using something like chipsec or uefitool. Flashing bios doesn't resolve this as stubs can be stealthily re-inserted.
You can also isolate these on your network and implement strong firewalling. In theory, any system can arrive compromised even from domestic suppliers but it's rational to treat these far more suspiciously. The PLA aggressively attempts to compromise hardware layers through groups like Unit 61398 and they defend against the same types of attack under CNITSEC. If you are going to buy one of these, try to mitigate the risk as much as is possible or only connect it to networks that xmit no sensitive data.

Here you are worrying about UEFI bootkits and DMA attacks and me who is running 8 PC's in my house all with no antivirus and windows defender turned off

Stop living in fear. I mean if you have government secrets or a self hosted bitcoin wallet on your PC worth millions by all means worry other than that who gives a crap! What is China going to get my debit card number ( if so my bank will give the money back) as far as other stuff learning what I watch or browse or whatever that information is already out there for sale to the highest bidder anyways so don't care! Do you know your smart TV is taking photos of whatever you watch and sending that info to Samsung, TCL or whoever the manufacturer is! That Blink camera you have is sending information back to Amazon to help train their AI face recognition! You don't need to worry about China spying on you America is already doing it for them!!! I haven't ran any antivirus ( at home)since 1998 BTW

Thanks for sharing your feelings. My reply stands. Try and imagine that your subjective threat risk and comfort level aren't universal. TheDealMcCoy is free to consider what I said and do whatever they want. There's a sharp pattern with these deals where anyone who has questions about security or even explains security concerns gets heckled. There's zero harm in informing others of risk and less than zero harm if other people prefer or need more security than you.

But that's software. I'm referring to a physical box that has the word "fire" in it.

Really appreciate your input. I'll comb through this and see if these are things I can do. Thank you.

What you mention is precisely the reason I'm interested in protecting my privacy. I only see your comments as supporting the need to understand and prevent against infringements of privacy and spying.

At this point the only thing you can do is live in a cave or try and pressure lawmakers for changes. You can get a VPN but your just trading your ISP knowing what you are doing for the VPN provider. You can not use Chrome because you don't want Google to know what you are doing but then Microsoft or whoever the new web browser manufacturer will have that info instead! I wish it was otherwise but it has been allowed to get too bad! LEave your house with your cell phone that is tracking you everywhere you go by name. Leave your cell phone at home that's ok your local PD is using Flock cameras on all the roads and when you stop at Walmart or Lowes your license plate and face are ID'ed and sent to whoever! Stay at home that's ok too every FEDEX van has it's own GPS and camera and they take a photo of who's car is in your driveway! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWDCHr7vEKk

$230 with "additional charges" which is only maybe $30-$30 cheaper than everday pricing on Amazon! not a bad deal but nothing to get too excited over! soldered single channel RAM makes it worth less to me than the everyday amazon mini PC prices to me!

Yeah, all that you say is why I'd like to attempt to do something. That we're even here in a "free" country, is mind boggling. We're obviously not too free.

Your free just watched. Mostly it isn't nefarious just mostly watching what you do when you do it so they can sell you more stuff. This will be vastly more useful in the near future when you not only get targeted adds but AI adds generated specifically for you in real time. The other uses are to make the jobs of lazy police officers easier by already knowing who was near any incidents. This greatly narrows down the suspect list if they can tell who was within a 1 block radius of a crime during the time it happened. The scary part is the future where you watch too many anti government you tube videos and you et a knock at the door. Maybe you post a certain combination of Facebook or Twitter posts and the AI determines you are in need of some mental health help so the rubber wagon shows up to haul you away to a padded room!

I wanna get my lil niece into computers (not only iPads) would this be a good, cheap way to show her how computers work? How easy would be to disassemble it and show her all the innards?
