Pretty fluid situation as there is a lot of unknowns right now. Google released their algorithm that supposedly will reduce Ai memory usage by 6x in some cases.

On top of that multiple Ai projects for data centers have been cancelled. Investments pulled on others from outside parties that had planned on investing.
Project Stargate being one of the biggest. Which is also what caused a lot of the RAM surge in the first place. Apparently Sam Altman signed multiple purchase orders that would have given them over 40% of the RAM supply. Orders from SK Hynix and Samsung. Apparently they had no actual contracts with no actual signatures.

So all these companies like Micron jumped on the Ai bandwagon but not all of this RAM that was allocated for Open Ai is now not sold. It was bad business by multiple actors in the situation. People letting greed lead their decisions.

How it all plays out is yet to be seen. Or if Ai can rebound as its hurdles are getting bigger. They also say the money needing to be invested per each generational leap is going to cost at least 4x what they have spent thus far. The low hanging fruit so to speak is gone in Ai with generational leaps requiring much more investment.

Add on top of that the current administration told Ai and data center companies they are now going to have to foot the bill on infrastructure for electricity and water resources and can't put the burden on the tax payers of local cities and/or states. Driving costs up even more.
A lot of variables. If Open Ai ends up not ordering any of the RAM they had promised it could flood the market with RAM dropping prices significantly. But that is only speculation at this point.

Is the memory boondoggle coming to an end soon? Or are they just clearing out before the hammer comes down?

It's day to day. There is some recent volatility in memory prices because of some research being done by Google that could greatly reduce the memory demands of A.I. workloads. So, maybe, some day, the memory boondoggle might come to an end.

Woot does unpredictable stuff. The other day they sold laptops with 4080's for 100 bucks.

Still too expensive for 32gb but YT all day yesterday was talking about prices going down. This is a little cheaper and if I was in need I probably would jump on this. If not in need, then definitely wait.

some news outlet saying that openai's reservation of 40% of the global DRAM output is falling through...but they recently raised money...
all that to say, if you have to upgrade, this is better pricing compared to a week ago.

I came here to say the same thing, your comment is accurate.

It's unfortunate that we live in a social media driven narrative environment. We are basically pricing everything based on rumors.

I see the same thing happening to RAM pricing in about 6 months what happened to fitness stuff after the COVID price surge died. Don't buy if there is no urgency!

The difference here is there are really only 3 manufacturer of RAM for nearly all of the computer market - Samsung, Hynix, and micron.

Jevons Paradox unfortunately points to this not necessary being our future for RAM prices and availability.

Some Chinese manufacturers recently joined the wagon.
