I would advise against getting these thermostats, not because of the taking or being from Google, but because they're actual trash. Have gone through 2 of them in 2 years. Relay sticks and when you send it for warranty thinking you'd get a new one, you instead get a refurbished extremely visibly used one.

Haven't used this particular one, but I have the "free" nest one (coupon from my electric company) and it's been great! The "Google - Nest Smart Programmable Wifi Thermostat" - installed it in 2 different locations (moved), still works great today, so much better than the old non-smart thermostats, and super convenient for being able to monitor and adjust the temp remotely.

Google recently obsoleted the 1st and 2nd gen nest thermostats. I got a 4th gen to replace mine, which requires using the Google Home app over the old Nest app. The new app is not great, and doesn't allow as much flexibility in scheduling. It's also supposed to support Apple HomeKit, but I havnt been able to get it to work.
All that is, to say, I don't know how much longer Google will continue supporting the 3rd gen of these thermostats and the fact that they stopped allowing app control of the 2nd gen a while back was a pretty poor move by them.

I've had mine for almost 9 years, going strong still - hoping EOL is a bit farther out.

I'm similarly wary. My 1st gen was running strong and then they rug pulled the app and made it a dumb thermostat. If I hadn't gotten a free one from my utilities, I would have abandoned Nest for something else.

3rd gen had to be in it's twilight years of support via the app..
