The Xbox Ally with Z2A is a portable Windows handheld that shines for Game Pass, indie games, and casual play, with a 7 inch 120Hz screen, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The included game bundle and Game Pass extras make the $499.99 price feel much lower, especially if the extras get used. Performance is generally described as above the Steam Deck and fine for many games at 1080p or 720p on low settings, though heavier AAA titles will not run at high settings and the Z1 Extreme model is faster. The larger 60Wh battery and more comfortable ergonomics are notable strengths, making it a practical travel companion.

Common Questions (5)

  • The Z1 Extreme model is significantly faster, with about 2x the CPU cores, 50% more GPU cores, and roughly 15-20% better performance in some games. The Z2A still generally matches or exceeds a Steam Deck, but it is the weaker chip.

  • It will play Fortnite, and benchmark videos can show the FPS and settings you can expect. It can handle many AAA games at 1080p or 720p on low settings, but it will not run every latest game at high settings with all the visual extras.

  • With the bundled games and Game Pass value, the effective handheld cost can drop to about $275-$375 if you use the extras. At the $499.99 sale price, it is framed as a strong deal for a 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD handheld.

  • Yes, the promotion terms say all of the included free games must be redeemed on Steam. Their listed sale value is about $189.96 via Steam, or $84.26 using Loaded pricing as a comparison.

  • Yes, the Z2A Xbox Ally has a 60Wh battery versus 40Wh on the original Z1 Extreme Ally. It also avoids the original model's microSD card slot issue, which could damage cards.

I ended up buying one of these.

Will this play all the latest games at high settings? No, but it's a nice supplemental handheld to your main gaming console/PC, particularly if you have Xbox/PC GamePass. Also Lenovo just gave their Legion Go 2 handhelds a significant price hike today and Sony their PlayStation consoles last week, so I feel like these deals may be fewer and farer between as components continue to skyrocket in price.

Don't think it's a great idea to use that site for the current prices, just use the Microsoft store or Steam
All of the "free" games have to be redeemed on Steam, just checked the terms and conditions for the promotion. I'm pretty sure a huge amount of Steam users and PC gamers are quite familiar with Loaded(aka cdkeys) so it's a good comparison. Only downside to using Loaded is there isn't a generous return policy like when purchasing games from Steam directly.

would this be a good investment for retirement?
Absolutely, if you like to invest in things that go down in value over time.

$500 should've been the starting price for this. Even then I'd still probably go for the Legion Go S.
This coming with a 512ssd and 16gb of ram is pretty fantastic. Lies of P and space marine 2 are great tie ins. If you look at it as like $400 (+games) I would say it's definitely worth a buy over some of the competition (msi claw, legion go (non-s), steamdeck oled)

I had a Z1E and it couldn't play Fortnite. Is everyone saying this one is weaker?

Need advice on this. Not a gamer but want to play Fortnite with the kiddos. Is this OK or something else would be better?

lol

Since you haven't been paying attention: gaming platforms have all seen multiple price increases over the past couple years. Nobody expects the Steam Machine to still launch this year. Steam Deck pricing has already gone up in several countries (about 20%) and most real gamers expect this won't be constrained to a single region.

512 GiB NVME is up ~3x over the past 6 months (spot price of ~$55, now $225)

DDR ram is similarly up ~3x over the same time period. While LPDDR5X hasn't seen the same yet, I'm sure it's fine and especially won't be affected by NVIDIA using it in their newer data center CPUs (like Vera Rubin) which use it.

Hilarious how confidently arrogant you are with your head in the ground.

It will play Fortnite. You can check YouTube for some Xbox Ally Fortnite benchmark videos to see the graphical quality and FPS you get on the device.

I had the ROG Ally 7" 120Hz FHD 1080p Gaming Handheld - AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Processor - 512GB and if I had it on 120hz, it would not skip and not render at any setting. Maybe I had a bad unit.

Wow, this seems like a good deal. As a casual gamer, am I missing much compared to a Z1E? Is the Z2A much more energy efficient? Thanks in advance !
IMO the ergonomics on this are more comfortable

Not extreme. Wonder how this would do as a dockable desktop replacement?
