The Xbox Ally with Z2A is a portable Windows handheld that shines for Game Pass, indie games, and casual play, with a 7 inch 120Hz screen, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The included game bundle and Game Pass extras make the $499.99 price feel much lower, especially if the extras get used. Performance is generally described as above the Steam Deck and fine for many games at 1080p or 720p on low settings, though heavier AAA titles will not run at high settings and the Z1 Extreme model is faster. The larger 60Wh battery and more comfortable ergonomics are notable strengths, making it a practical travel companion.

  • The included games can be redeemed on Steam, which keeps the promotion tied to Steam libraries.

  • The Z2A model can reach or exceed Steam Deck performance for many games.

  • The Z2A Xbox Ally can be a strong travel option for playing while waiting in cars or airports.

  • The deal can become more attractive when Game Pass is used, lowering the effective handheld cost.

  • The Z2A model is significantly weaker than the Z1 Extreme Ally for performance expectations.

  • The handheld may not run all latest games at high settings, making it better as a supplemental device.

  • The promotion's "Loaded" comparison can come with a less generous return policy than buying directly from Steam.

  • A prior 7-inch 120Hz Ally unit reportedly failed to render or skip at any setting, which suggests potential unit-specific issues.

Seems like a great way to play some Xbox GamePass games on the go. I'm not looking to play AAA on a 7" screen anyways, so indies are perfect.

It's like a Steam Deck. Don't really need it if you have other ways of mobile gaming.

Personally, I would rather go for an OG Z1E Ally over this. The Z2A is quite a bit weaker than the Z1E. edit: I meant Z2A, there is no Z1A
Where are you finding a z1e original NEW for this price range ? Plus the sticks suck on that model and the SD card reader is known for failure .

Since you haven't been paying attention: gaming platforms have all seen multiple price increases over the past couple years. Nobody expects the Steam Machine to still launch this year. Steam Deck pricing has already gone up in several countries (about 20%) and most real gamers expect this won't be constrained to a single region.

512 GiB NVME is up ~3x over the past 6 months (spot price of ~$55, now $225)

DDR ram is similarly up ~3x over the same time period. While LPDDR5X hasn't seen the same yet, I'm sure it's fine and especially won't be affected by NVIDIA using it in their newer data center CPUs (like Vera Rubin) which use it.

Hilarious how confidently arrogant you are with your head in the ground.
You should buy ten then. HODL

would this be a good investment for retirement?
This would be more of a divestment than an investment, imo. However, I hear that the pork belly market is trending upwards, so you might want to take a look at that instead

Absolutely, if you like to invest in things that go down in value over time.
So pretty much anything but gas and gold in 2026?

Oh wait, somehow gold is down too Wink

There is a reason why this version goes on sale so much and the only decent version doesn't.

Current prices for the "Free" games included:
Total Sale Value:
  • $189.96 via Steam
  • $84.26 via Loaded
When you add in Gamepass it becomes even better from a price perspective. If you truly want/use the extras, you are only paying $275 to $375 for the handheld.

I ended up buying one of these.

Will this play all the latest games at high settings? No, but it's a nice supplemental handheld to your main gaming console/PC, particularly if you have Xbox/PC GamePass. Also Lenovo just gave their Legion Go 2 handhelds a significant price hike today and Sony their PlayStation consoles last week, so I feel like these deals may be fewer and farer between as components continue to skyrocket in price.
$500 with 200+ in extras (if you use them) is a good deal in this economic situation.

I had a Z1E and it couldn't play Fortnite. Is everyone saying this one is weaker?
Huh? The Z1E can absolutely play Fortnite. That sounds like a settings issue.

IMO the ergonomics on this are more comfortable
Z1E will play heavier games at higher frame rates. Games like Cyberpunk will run on both, but better on the Z1E. Even heavier games such as Expedition 33, etc. are more playable on a Z1E (but I don't think that it is an optimal experience)

Handhelds have a different purpose, ie portability. If you want to play while waiting in a car, at an airport, etc a handheld is better than bringing your PS5 and a TV.
