The audio encoding of every steaming service has always been highly compressed and low bit rate compared to the encodes you'll get on the physical media versions, regardless of whether both are marketed as "Atmos". And unfortunately, streaming services are scaling back 4k and Dolby Vision content too, unless you get the highest tier. Hell, Amazon Prime just announced a quality roll back this week.
If you've dropped around $2k on a receiver, you don't want to skimp on the quality of the audio and video you feed it, because quality gear is generally more revealing. So, once you've invest in a piece of kit of this caliber, assuming you want to get the most enjoyment out of it, you almost have to invest in better media. The old adage of "crap in, crap out" is still applicable.
Inflation has been bad enough the past few years, but intentionally downgrading the quality of a service just doesn't sit right with me, especially when the technology to deliver it at a lower cost continues to advance.
Community Reviews
The RX-A8A is a flagship Yamaha AVR built for serious home theater, with strong build quality, 11 powered channels, handy preouts, and a polished interface that makes calibration and setup easy. The sound gets praised for Yamaha's house character, with extra micro detail, a cinematic center channel, and immersive surround performance that stands out with concerts and movies. The main caveat is room correction, since YPAO is seen as merely okay compared with Audyssey or Dirac, and streaming sources may not fully show what this receiver can do. It suits systems that can use its power and channel count, especially with physical media and well matched speakers.
Common Questions (5)
The RX-A8A is favored for Yamaha's house sound, build quality, and full 11-channel amplification, while the TX-RZ70 is often preferred for room correction value because it includes Dirac Live and can be found for less. The RZ70 also has a strong feature set, including Dirac Live Full Bandwidth and optional Bass Control.
It can be overkill for a basic 5.1 system, because a 5.1 layout won't fully use the receiver's object-based Atmos/DTS:X decoding. For streaming-focused use, the benefit is smaller unless you're feeding it higher-quality sources and planning to expand the speaker layout.
You can, but the receiver's strengths are easier to hear with higher-bitrate sources. Physical 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray tracks are described as sounding superior to streaming, which is more compressed even when labeled Atmos.
Yes. The RX-A8A is an 11.2-channel AVR that can power all 11 channels itself, so it can run full Atmos/DTS:X layouts without adding a separate amp. It also has preouts if you want to offload fronts or expand later.
It has 7 HDMI inputs, but only 3 support 4K60. That matters if you have multiple 4K60 sources and want to avoid swapping cables or using an external switch.

Never understood why people pay for something they're not going to use or actually need!
$1800 11.2 Atmos unit for a 5.1 setup!
Even then, $1800 for 11 150 watt internal amp/power for say 9 channel setup,
more so knowing not all 9 channels need 150 watts!
Good external amp/power supply is always better than internal ones.
Pay once, cry once I say.

Yahama's YPAO is just OK (better than no room correction) but not as good as Audyssey. Dirac (especially with ART) and Anthem's room correction are at a different level.
There have been recently solid deals on the Onkyo RZ-70 at a lower price point than this. You would get a better Audyssey room correction with that and if you pay a bit more, you can get Dirac DLBC license which is excellent.
"In my opinion" if those deals in the Onkyo were to come back, they are a much better buy than this yahama.
Depending on how much power your speakers need.
Emotiva's newer BasX+ may be a less expensive good option also.

Also note that these were routinely available for $1,600 in 2024. Those days are gone, but good for potential buyers to be aware of.
