Amazon gave these games away for free some months back last year during their Prime/Luna monthly giveaways over a course of a few months so if you have Amazon Prime, check your library...

Does it hold up in 2026 without any prior nostalgia? I never played it in the past.

Graphics - probably not. Gameplay, design and experience - yes for 1 & 2. I'd love a remaster myself

Surprisingly, yes. If you can accept the blocky visuals, the setting, sound and map design, and gameplay are great overall in the first two games (I haven't played the others). I would recommend the 'Thief Fix' mods, which improve some things and I think boost the graphical fidelity some.

Id be curious to know if they play on GOG without any trouble. I bought them for Steam and was only able to make the last one work without any mods.

2 great games, one good one, and one mediocre one.

It's a shame the devs and publisher felt the need to reboot the series with that 4th entry. And they dropped Stephen Russell as Garrett, which felt like the final middle finger to fans of the first 3 games. I won't say the 4th is unplayable, as it's the most modern of the 4 in terms of mechanics, but I couldn't will myself to get far into the game since it felt like a dumbed down version of Deadly Shadows.

The first and second are stealth classics. Very ahead of their time, with great stories. They are visually dated, but if you like retro games, the Dark Engine holds a special charm with its rank. There are mods to fix certain problems these games may have with Windows 11. It's possible these GOG releases work okay without them, but plenty of fan guides exist for making them fully playable in 2026.

Deadly Shadows was controversial amongst fans at release as an Unreal Engine 2 game with significant gameplay and pace changes, but I enjoyed it at release and like the story. Shalebridge Cradle is an amazing horror-themed level that holds up well to this day. If you play this game, make sure you use the Sneaky Mod to fix bugs, and remove the excessive load zones that plagued the original due to its cross platform release on the Xbox and PC. Thief 1 & 2 had some very large maps, something Thief DS did not have. Back in 2004, cross-platform almost guaranteed a downgrade in visuals or design to allow consoles with low memory to run these games. I'm happy to say that's not really a problem anymore.

Had to laugh - I went to buy the bundle, only to see this on attempting to check out:

"Your order total has been reduced because you already own some of the games included in Thief Bundle added to your cart. You won't receive additional copies of the games you own. Items you already own: Thief™ Gold, Thief™ 2: The Metal Age, Thief™ 3: Deadly Shadows, THIEF: Definitive Edition

Order subtotal $0
Sales TAX (AZ) $0
Order total $0"

Should have known I already owned these classics - well, three classics, anyway, and one terrible attempt at a reboot that abandoned everything that made the originals great.

As long as you go in with the understanding that they are older games, they definitely still hold up, especially once you apply some graphics mods.

I'm still running Windows 10, so I can't vouch for how they do on 11, but the GOG versions run fine on my machine.

According to the GOG listing's Game Details:
"Works on:
Windows (10, 11)"

The first two stand above the third, and the reboot was just an utter disappointment. Out of the first two, the second is probably the best, but you should still really play the original first.
