It's a shame the devs and publisher felt the need to reboot the series with that 4th entry. And they dropped Stephen Russell as Garrett, which felt like the final middle finger to fans of the first 3 games. I won't say the 4th is unplayable, as it's the most modern of the 4 in terms of mechanics, but I couldn't will myself to get far into the game since it felt like a dumbed down version of Deadly Shadows.
The first and second are stealth classics. Very ahead of their time, with great stories. They are visually dated, but if you like retro games, the Dark Engine holds a special charm with its rank. There are mods to fix certain problems these games may have with Windows 11. It's possible these GOG releases work okay without them, but plenty of fan guides exist for making them fully playable in 2026.
Deadly Shadows was controversial amongst fans at release as an Unreal Engine 2 game with significant gameplay and pace changes, but I enjoyed it at release and like the story. Shalebridge Cradle is an amazing horror-themed level that holds up well to this day. If you play this game, make sure you use the Sneaky Mod to fix bugs, and remove the excessive load zones that plagued the original due to its cross platform release on the Xbox and PC. Thief 1 & 2 had some very large maps, something Thief DS did not have. Back in 2004, cross-platform almost guaranteed a downgrade in visuals or design to allow consoles with low memory to run these games. I'm happy to say that's not really a problem anymore.

Should have known I already owned these classics - well, three classics, anyway, and one terrible attempt at a reboot that abandoned everything that made the originals great.
As long as you go in with the understanding that they are older games, they definitely still hold up, especially once you apply some graphics mods.
