2009 was still a relative age of innocence: long long before pandemic inflation, tariff inflation, and (latest arrival) Iran war inflation. $167 for these right now is a small miracle, considering all that.

Quincy Jones used AKGK701's in mastering Billie Jean and Thriller. These are (at least to my standards) what you want when you want to hear the most accurate way to listen to music as it was intended to be listened to.

Wow, I remember buying these when they first came out in the 2000s (2007-2008), but I'm sure they still sound the same: very wide soundstage, to the point of feeling artificial, with an "airy" presentation... I think they were going for a clean, analytical sound but it just wasn't fun to listen through, even with beefy tube and solid state amps involved. Also I see they aren't made in Austria anymore, but China.

I got the K702s refurbished for $80 in 2024. By far my favorite sounding headphone, one of the best purchases I've ever made. The K701 don't have a detachable cable but supposedly sound nearly identicle. I would say definately worth the money at $167.

Actually I took a quick peak and there's a set of K702s used like new for $100 on Amazon, that's what I would go for if I was in the market because of the detachable cable.

I bought these years ago when I felt nostalgic for a cheap pair of AKGs I had as a kid but was ultimately disappointed using these for music listening enjoyment. Maybe they are great for pro use but felt lifeless to me

k7xx have slightly more bass/mid-bass, highs are a bit different, and overall sound a bit warmer/muddier.

I got in in the 1st round of orders for the k7xx from drop/massdrop and ended selling them.
