Is this any good for the most basic stuff? I know DJ osmo cost more but all I need it for is to keep my phone pointing up so I can do some amateur astrophotography with my Galaxy s25.

Yea. I bought one last sale and with additional discount got it for $18. But the only thing this one isn't as good is the tracking feature. It definitely tracks faces but if you move too fast out of the screen the gimbal will stop following. Dji has some predictive features to try to find the face and restart tracking that's a little better. Even so, considering everything else is fairly similar it's definitely worth the price. It all depends on what you're going to use it for though.

The reviews don't look good for Samsung/Android and the app is limited or clunky. I'd rather stick with a name brand for an extra $10

I have the Smart V8 and it does work as a stabilization gimbal without the app. I have not downloaded the app on my iPhone.

If you're doing astro you'll want a sturdier tripod than this, and it would probably cost around the same.
