Why is maglite so expensive, is it because of the name? You get so much better performing flashlights for much less money from many other brands.

Name and reputation.

And there are much better lights out there for sure. And those better light can be found much cheaper.

(Wurkkos FC11c --> 1200 lumens --> $20 --> Comes with a 18650 battery AND charging cable AND built-in charging port.)

Maglite --> Uses an esoteric 1980s C-cell battery format which NO ONE uses anymore. And 490 lumens is a joke. And....batteries are NOT included!

They claim on the box to be "A USA Manufacturer" with an adorable USA flag -- which is a really weird way of not being entirely clear if this specific product is "Made in the USA". So until proven otherwise, assume it's made in the same giant factories in China as all the other cheapo lights are made. So not only it's Made in China, they're trying to deceive you about it. I know how I'll vote with my wallet.

You were absolutely correct to call out the price vs performance of the maglite flashlights. I was a huge maglite Homer in the 90s and early 2000s, but today you can get quality made, higher performing devices for less money.

Where you went off track is trying to make some sort of weird assumption that maglites are made in China. I'm pretty sure they're manufactured in the same Socal area they've been in since the 80s. I wouldn't be surprised if they've downsized some, but when my buddy worked there 12+ years ago he said they had 1000 employees in the building doing everything from machining aluminum to plastic packaging.

The photo of the box literally says "A USA Manufacturer"....which is very suspect. Not "Made in the USA".

It's like a product saying "Designed in the USA" or "Partially assembled in the USA" or something of the same nonsense.

Maybe they do make some products here. Which makes that claim "A USA Manufacturer" 100% accurate. But there's no information on scAmazon's webpage confirming country of origin.

There should be a case study done on this company for their failure to adapt to changing technology; they are the Blackberry of the flashlight world. I have a box full of old non-led, d-cell lights and most of the tail caps are welded shut from leaking batteries.

"Made in the USA" has a rule about what percent of the content must be sourced within the US. I believe that percent is based on price (vs weight or volume etc).
I suspect two things hurt Maglite vs the old "made in USA" models. First, they *might* have to source their raw metal from outside of North America due to availability. It wouldn't be Maglite's fault if the mill they used to buy aluminum from closed shop. That is speculation on my part.
The second part which is the "bulb". In the old days the bulb was relatively low cost and likely made in the US. The LED+driver circuit is more expensive and those are likely impossible to source inside the US. Thus even if the factory does all the same mfg steps they've always done, if they can't but made in US metal stock (not sure this is true) and can't buy the LED circuit in the US (I'm almost certain this is true) then they fail to hit the percent price requirements to claim made in USA. This isn't by choice, just the economic realities.
As for this light, I have the 3C version and run it on AA batteries with an adapter. Very strong throw. Yes, the brightness is lower but the reach is still class leading. But the large size means it only is used when I need reach.

They use "A U.S.A. Manufacturer" because some of their componts are sourced globally (LEDs and circuitry, some O-rings and seals). They machine the flashlight bodies domestically but raw material is sourced globally. A lot of their packaging has something like "Some imported parts/components used." on it.

So it's misleading then. That's ok, nearly everything is made in china anymore. But just because a couple of people in Callie-fornya assembles a few items into a box....doesn't make it Made in USA. Get the flag off the box.

It's not deceptive. It's the reality of the US having a very strict "made in xxx" standard. Do a search for what Made in Switzerland standards are vs Made in USA.

Plain and simple -- it's NOT made in USA, but they still slap a big ol' flag on it, making people think "oh flag = made in...". It's a lie. That's ok, you buy what you want. Support the companies you want.

I know where I'll be voting with my wallet. Tata.

I don't think you understand what you are being told. They try to make as much as possible in the US.

I wonder how many "Swiss" watches would be Swiss if they had the same legal standards as the US.

Maglights aren't flashlights. You're buying a club and plausible deniability. Which happens to light up. Poorly.

What alternative flashlights are there that are entirely made in the US? For that matter, is the electronic device you're using entirely made in the US? Your TV? Your car? Stop virtue signaling...globalism is inevitable.

Read my comments. I don't care if it's made in the USA or not. I care about a product trying to trick people into thinking something IS made in the USA when it's clearly not. Kindly shelve that righteous indignation before getting the entire picture.
