AcuRite Iris is a feature packed local weather station best at giving real time conditions at home, especially rain tracking and lightning detection. The self emptying rain gauge stands out, and the hub can provide day, week, and month totals with graphs. It also appeals to Home Assistant tinkerers because the 433 MHz signal may integrate through rtl_433 or an Ecowitt gateway. The main drawbacks are reliability and upkeep, with reports of sensors needing cleaning or replacement, occasional resets after power loss, and outdoor units that can fail after a few years.
homeowners who want real-time, hyperlocal weather instead of relying on phone or town reports because commenters say the station gives accurate local data and that phone weather is often way off for their location.
DIY tinkerers who are okay doing light maintenance because multiple commenters say these stations can keep working for years if you clean the sensors and periodically replace batteries (and in one case replace the temp/humidity sensor board).
people who specifically care about rain totals and want a self-emptying rain gauge because commenters call the self-emptying rain gauge "worth it just by itself" and highlight it as the best part.
buyers planning to integrate weather data into Home Assistant because commenters note the station transmits on standard 433 MHz and may be detected by Ecowitt GW1100/other setups, with Home Assistant integration via rtl_433 mentioned as well.
people who can place the outdoor array correctly and want better temperature accuracy because commenters mention strict placement requirements and also suggest that keeping air flowing over the sensor (vs a single solar panel) can improve temperature readings.
buyers who want a weather station that "just works" without reliability risk because commenters report units that randomly die (including one that dies every 12-16 months with no warning) and others describing dead stations with no easy fix.
people who don't want to deal with power-related quirks because commenters say brief power loss can reset the station date/time to 01/01/2000 and that rain gauge readings can become inconsistent after issues.
buyers who need wind performance to be consistently reliable because commenters say wind speed/direction sensors needed to be removed and lubricated to get them working again after the unit started acting up.
buyers who want a plug-and-play setup with flexible placement because commenters say the outdoor placement has strict distance/height requirements before it can be set up.
people expecting a "smart device" experience because commenters describe the display as mostly static LCD elements (not a smart device), with the "fancy" look being just background art.
Several owners report the outdoor array lasting about 3-5 years, while others have had units running 7 years or more with battery changes and cleaning. A recurring failure mode is the station dying with no warning, sometimes after 12-16 months, so replacement parts or a backup plan can help.
Yes. The outdoor sensors need periodic cleaning, batteries, and sometimes replacement of the temperature/humidity sensor board, which can cost under $20 and take about 10 minutes. Keeping the sensors clean and replacing that board can restore operation in most cases.
It claims standard 433 MHz transmission, so it may be detected by an Ecowitt GW1100 and then integrated into Home Assistant. HomeKit support is limited to temperature and humidity, and rtl_433 with a $10 dongle is another path for piping the data into other platforms.
It is a basic LCD display with static color background art, not a smart device. The screen shows weather and temperature data through illuminated LCD elements, so the value is mainly in the sensor package rather than a fancy display.
According to the camel, this matches the lowest pricing since 2017 AND hasn't been this low in some time so should go FP. ... Except for the limited number of weather geeks out there? 😄
There's a good chance that third-party hacks to intercept the data for logging likely work on this model also.

I've been using the Iris model for 4-5 years now. IT's great when it works but I'll be honest, it dies about every 12-16 months and you have to replace it. NO warning, just KAPUT. Mine is dead now and I've been hunting, can't decide if I should get another or change lol
Goodness...there sure are a bunch of Acurite models. Their website has a "compare" feature but doesn't work very well on mobile browser, it seems.
Is there a model that just uses a phone so I'm not pahing extra for the screen/monitor (tho I understand how that could be handy)?
Probably would cost more, it's somewhat deceiving but everything color and fancy looking is just static background art. The display is just a handful of LCD objects that illuminate to show you the weather and temps etc. It's not like a "smart device" or anything like that. Biggest savings would be to go to one with less features (I got ours on a SD for like 35-40 bucks but it doesn't have the lightning detector or the rain gauge functions).

I was given this as a gift two years ago, but haven't set it up because there are so many requirements to where you can put the thing outside! It has to be a certain distance away from everything, but a certain distance up in the air.
Ambient Weather is much better then Accurite. I've had both, Accurite rain gauge stopped working for me and now temperature has been stuck at 55. Garbage

exactly - my AcuRite Atlas is dead - no fixing it. what a shame. NEver again.

This one claims it works on the standard 433 MHz, so there is a fair chance it may be detected by an e.g. Ecowitt GW1100. If that is the case, then you can trivially integrate this into Home Assistant and then by extension Homekit (although Homekit itself only supports temp + humidity, not rain/wind/lightning).
Basically if you care about bringing these weather stations into Home Assistant, look for one that is transmitting on 915/868/433MHz, and then google around to see if the Ecowitt supports it. Most of the white label ones it does. Ironically the cheaper the weather station the more likely it is to work out of the box, the more expensive ones with WiFi/Bluetooth/etc need their own integration which is often worse than Ecowitt.

It works with the hub which gives you access to their backend statistics for day/week/month totals and graphs. Also well worth it.
