AcuRite Iris is a feature packed local weather station best at giving real time conditions at home, especially rain tracking and lightning detection. The self emptying rain gauge stands out, and the hub can provide day, week, and month totals with graphs. It also appeals to Home Assistant tinkerers because the 433 MHz signal may integrate through rtl_433 or an Ecowitt gateway. The main drawbacks are reliability and upkeep, with reports of sensors needing cleaning or replacement, occasional resets after power loss, and outdoor units that can fail after a few years.

Common Questions (4)

  • Several owners report the outdoor array lasting about 3-5 years, while others have had units running 7 years or more with battery changes and cleaning. A recurring failure mode is the station dying with no warning, sometimes after 12-16 months, so replacement parts or a backup plan can help.

  • Yes. The outdoor sensors need periodic cleaning, batteries, and sometimes replacement of the temperature/humidity sensor board, which can cost under $20 and take about 10 minutes. Keeping the sensors clean and replacing that board can restore operation in most cases.

  • It claims standard 433 MHz transmission, so it may be detected by an Ecowitt GW1100 and then integrated into Home Assistant. HomeKit support is limited to temperature and humidity, and rtl_433 with a $10 dongle is another path for piping the data into other platforms.

  • It is a basic LCD display with static color background art, not a smart device. The screen shows weather and temperature data through illuminated LCD elements, so the value is mainly in the sensor package rather than a fancy display.

I've been using the Iris model for 4-5 years now. IT's great when it works but I'll be honest, it dies about every 12-16 months and you have to replace it. NO warning, just KAPUT. Mine is dead now and I've been hunting, can't decide if I should get another or change lol
I have had two of these units in 10 years- thats pretty good for something electronic thats outside 24/7! You have to replace the little temperature humidity sensor board every year or so its less than $20 and takes 10 minutes to replace- its kind of a replaceable item like brake pads on a car- and replacing it gets your station up again 99% of the time.

It worked pretty well the first year or two, esp the rain gauge I liked. However, it started turning yellow and after some point I had no idea how the thing was even working anymore. The wind speed sensor and wind direction sensors I had to pull off and lubricate to get them working again.

It would no doubt give more accurate temp readings by keeping air flowing over the sensor better than the single solar panel.

Ambient Weather is much better then Accurite. I've had both, Accurite rain gauge stopped working for me and now temperature has been stuck at 55. Garbage
We should hang out.

Ambient Weather WS-2902 Home Wi-Fi Weather Station with Wi-Fi Remote Monitoring and Alerts. This is the one I have. I've been happy with it and I've had it for a couple of years now. Just wish I had the lightning detector to go with it but it's like $60. I like being able see the temps/weather at my house from anywhere. I also like the fact that I can set alerts for things like wind/rain/temps and even when it loses power so you know there's been an outage which is pretty cool.

Totally agree... and what drives me crazy is when the power goes off for a few seconds it sets itself back to 01/01/2000 .... u have to be %^$# me .... and also the rain gauge confuses itself often ... will say that the rain for the day is 0.25 but for the week its 2.27 and month is 1.75 .... oh and BTW it hasn't rain more than once.... anyway ... it is what it is ... i have 2 of them ... but be prepared for it to die ....

for those that might not know the outside weather array and lightening detector are compatible with other iris displays. i.e. you can have multiple displays with just one outside weather array.
the $100 for this set is usually the cost for the outside weather array only.
these outside weather arrays last about 3-5 years before something starts acting up.
keep the old/broken outside weather array for parts.
