AcuRite Iris is a feature packed local weather station best at giving real time conditions at home, especially rain tracking and lightning detection. The self emptying rain gauge stands out, and the hub can provide day, week, and month totals with graphs. It also appeals to Home Assistant tinkerers because the 433 MHz signal may integrate through rtl_433 or an Ecowitt gateway. The main drawbacks are reliability and upkeep, with reports of sensors needing cleaning or replacement, occasional resets after power loss, and outdoor units that can fail after a few years.

Okay but don't the weather stations already have access to this information and therefore you do too? This thing seems redundant and like a scam.

I've been using the Iris model for 4-5 years now. IT's great when it works but I'll be honest, it dies about every 12-16 months and you have to replace it. NO warning, just KAPUT. Mine is dead now and I've been hunting, can't decide if I should get another or change lol
I also have had bad luck with this brand. Remember, it has to be plugged in and is very bright

These are great. Have to replace batteries every so often and clean it but mine has been going strong for 7 years. Rain gage is the best part. Works great

It works great and gives you real time accurate data at your location. The weather that displays on your phone is often way off for your location.

I have had two of these units in 10 years- thats pretty good for something electronic thats outside 24/7! You have to replace the little temperature humidity sensor board every year or so its less than $20 and takes 10 minutes to replace- its kind of a replaceable item like brake pads on a car- and replacing it gets your station up again 99% of the time.
I dony know what the iris is but my accurite is 7 yrs old. Never had to replace anything but the batteries

It worked pretty well the first year or two, esp the rain gauge I liked. However, it started turning yellow and after some point I had no idea how the thing was even working anymore. The wind speed sensor and wind direction sensors I had to pull off and lubricate to get them working again.
It stays outside so it needs cleaning sometimes. We have 2 at different locations. Both have been great for 5+ years with just occasional cleaning and battery changes. Get this great deal if you enjoy accurate real time local weather data.

I agree these don't last forever but I get 3-5 at minimum if not near salt water.

Look up rtl_433, it uses a $10 dongle to pipe this into home assistant or other platforms. And you might find you have a few other devices that can be integrated as well.

Honest question, why would the average person need this when this information is easily available?

Because in many areas, the weather is different than the "town" reporting station. At times i can get an inch of rain while their gauge says a 1/4.
