So do these actually work reliably over bluetooth now on a PC? I have a prior gen and it only works right with the dongle.

I have this and I use an old cheap usb Bluetooth 4.2 dongle on my computer. Now weirdly. The fancy intel killer WiFi 6 and Bluetooth controller on my asus tuf gaming motherboard would barely work. But the cheap crappy Bluetooth dongle works perfect. It takes two double AA batteries. I just use the Amazon high capacity rechargeable batteries and they last a long time for me.

I bought this controller about 5 years ago and last year I replaced the trigger buttons with a cheap aftermarket set and it's been fine.

I ordered one of the black ones (with the cord) last week when I first saw the deal. The one that I got was 100% sealed, brand new. No complaints since I was about to drop $50 for one on Amazon.
