It's a decent deal but I'd probably take a refurb Z50II unless you have the lenses already. I'm planning to trade my D7500 for a Z50II, to use as backup wildlife camera.

Both great cameras. D7500 handles great and something about dslrs just wins the whole ergonimics thing for me. Z50ii same crop but man the pix are sharp and Def better in low light. Battery not so great but usb chargeable. I have both and love them both. Z50ii I use when I travel and my big z's are too big to tote.

What the heck is there a reason to get a DSLR in 2026 when there are 1 million decent cameras at this price?
For sports and wildlife, it's superior to any new $700 camera. It's even superior in some ways to the Z50II which is $1000. But the latter can shoot action from the LCD screen much better than the D7500 and has eye AF and Expeed 7 vs 5.

If you're already well invested in DSLR lenses then it's a good replacement if yours goes TU or you want/need a backup.

Do D40 lenses fit on a D7500? The only thing not going well with my D-40 is battery life.

Better deal at Adorama - same price and you get a free SanDisk Extreme 32gb card and camera bag. You also risk getting used items from Amazon even when you purchase a New item (especially since there are no seals on camera boxes). I have a D7200 (bought it from MPB within the last year in 99.5% New condition for $429) and LOVE it. For reference, I also the latest gears (eg Fujifilm X-H2, Sony A6700) and still love DSLR. I prefer viewfinders in DSLR, the nice clacking sound of the mirror, and the LCD screen on the Nikon makes the screen of the A6700 and X-H2 look outdated. No Joke - my Nikon D300s released in 2009 has a better LCD screen than my X-H2 or A6700.

I had one for 6 years...great camera. Popup lenses are rare these days. It's too bad it didn't do HSS with the popup. I don't know if I'd jump into the Nikon dslr ecosystem with a new camera tho. I'd probably look for a secondhand dslr and lenses. Through clist, eBay, fb marketplace, etc.

Nikon refurb is also great when they run their sales.

Second this...and they 7500 is the only crop dslr I recall seeing on their refurbished store. But then they have the d780 on there for 1k sometimes so if you want to go the dslr route just eat Ramen for a month and get the 780 😝

Well this model in used but like new condition from KEH is basically the same price and about $150 more than no idea what the shutter count would be.
With DSLR being discontinued, I think there is some merit to buy new as you are going to want it to last as long as possible.
While I prefer my mirror less cameras they are not in this price bracket and there is something to be said about the amount of F mount glass out there for cheap.
The fact this has the screw autofocus mechanism means decades worth of glass out there.
Other option is risk it on used and get a full frame for the same price or even less.

Yeah specifically for action like birds or sports, this is a great budget option thanks to being crop and having 8 fps RAW. While mirrorless cameras can spec higher fps, it usually is accompanied by viewfinder lag and blackouts. For Nikon you really need a Z6III or Z8 to get a smooth viewfinder with 10+ fps.
Paired with a refurb AFP DX 70-300 VR, this is a great wildlife combo under $1000.
for other uses like landscape, street or portrait there's better choices.

I noticed that a lot of Nikon's are on sale, I'm tempted to pick up a P950
