It looks silly, but they really level up the smokey flavor of anything you're cooking. I have like a tube that you fill with chips/pellets and light and I usually use that WITH my pellet grill. It really helps give that woodfire punch I want to things like a steak that cook a fast as opposed to something I'm smoking for hours.
I have never had any luck with these smoker boxes on my gas grill. But I, too, have a smoker tube - that uses pellets - and it works great! Definitely not as good as my PBC, but great for smoked cheese and adding a little smoke flavor on the Weber
