These are nice, just remember to let some water out when you close the air vent. This helps prevent the jug from dripping at the nozzle.

I have one and think it's great. I use it to store hot water. 6 hours later, water was still steaming hot.

fyi, if you look through the different colors and check their price historys, they have all dropped to this price at least a couple times in the past few months. personally, if i was getting one, id choose a lighter color so it absorbs less heat if i happen to have it in the sun.

Lots of comments about leaks on Amazon and not getting warranty support. Kind of pricey if they won't stand behind it

If you look at reviews a lot will say they drip at the nozzle and think the nozzle is defective and get replacements from stanley but it doesn't fix it. I found out the hard way to let water out after closing the vent. Never had a spill of water after that.

I just bought one and was considering this very thing when deciding on color options. As a guy, I found it a bit disappointing that except for the white/black one, all the lighter colors look pretty girly to me.

I recently bought one but was on the fence because of this, but there are some aftermarket spigots you can get for them. I was looking at a 2-pack of spigots for about $18 on Amazon, and it's of an entirely different design than the one that comes with it new.
It's a pretty crap spigot design, but fortunately it's easy to remove and there is just a single hole that goes through the cooler body, so there should theoretically be a few different options for spigot upgrades/swaps. The one I was looking at has a twist knob that will allow the water to stay flowing hands-free, which is great for camping when washing hands/face or brushing teeth. I plan to get them to have on hand when and if the original spigot fails.

You don't have to get an aftermarket spigot. Read my comment above, you just let some water out once you close the air vent and you should have any leaks. Spigot is not the best design, but there's a workaround without paying extra.

That will probably work for a while and in some cases, since it creates a vacuum (negative pressure) inside which helps keep the water from leaking, but I'm certain that there is a threshold where the seal becomes less and less airtight, and it will let air back into the cooler and equalize the pressure. At least that's how I see it happening after some time.
I'm fully expecting the original spigot to fail at some point and consider it a matter of 'when' and not 'if'. It's possible that keeping a vacuum inside as mentioned will prolong the life of the spigot, and I make every attempt to operate it that way.

I think your solution is a great idea. I do wonder though if it were used during a typical hike in the mountains, if changes in elevation might cause additional leaking. I suppose if getting one, it would be something to test promptly.
To be clear, I mean the elevation gain that occurs from driving from the city to the trailhead or vice versa (1000 meters or more of gain/loss).
