Community Reviews

The TCL NXTPAPER 70 Pro stands out as a midrange phone that doubles as a very eye friendly e reader, with a matte screen, ePaper mode, long battery life, IP68 water resistance, and a fingerprint sensor on the power button. The screen is praised for reducing eye strain, especially at night, and the device can work well as a pocket reader or Wi Fi ebook device. Metro pricing appears to hinge on port in and plan choice, with the phone free on a $55 first month plan or $19.99 on a higher monthly plan. Main cautions are the 365 day unlock wait, limited included service, possible bloatware, and weaker outdoor visibility for some.

Common Questions (5)

  • Metro/T-Mobile units can vary: some report no bloatware out of the box, while others expect carrier apps and auto-installed bloat after reboots. Shizuku and Canta, or ADB/UAD tools, can remove or disable many of those apps, though some TCL/Metro setups may re-enable pieces after reboot or updates.

  • The NXTPAPER screen is described as easy on the eyes, with a matte ePaper mode that feels Kindle-like and can work well as a pocket e-reader. It also gets praise for long battery life, but outdoor visibility and dithering can be drawbacks for some users.

  • Yes. Metro activation can be done online using the activation link in the shipping email, and some units arrive with eSIM already included. If the email flow does not work, Metro's activation page also points to website or customer-care activation.

  • Metro's unlock cycle starts only after activation, and the device is generally expected to unlock after 365 days. The appeal is that it can unlock without extra refill payments after the initial purchase, unlike carriers that require paid service to reach unlock eligibility.

  • With a port-in, the phone can be free only if you take the $55 first-month plan, making the total $55 plus tax. If you want the lower phone price for a new number, the minimum plan rises to $65 per month.

Yes, get a port in a number from a different carrier for $20 or less.1) Disable auto-pay (disabled by default unless you change it)2) Don't pay month 2
Do you even need to activate the phone at all to use it as a WiFi device?

Nope if you don't want to activate the sim card but I don't see a reason to not do it

If you do not know what a tcl paper screen is, you may want to look up a video on it. I got the tcl paper tablet from straight talk and love the screen. No more strained eyes at night time. As someone mentioned it isn't great outside. Now I believe these are upgraded screens from the one in my tablet so they may be better outside now.

This has happened to me before and it was because they were seeing I was trying to port in a Google Voice number and it was auto-rejecting at the checkout. I had successfully ported a Google Voice number before but the second separate order got flagged and they had to manually send it to the department for processing and review. I didn't proceed with the second order in the end due to a time crunch of leaving the country and the phone wouldn't arrive in time for me to activate. Hope this helps.

How many lines can you add to a Metro account now? I have 2 phones and a tablet and can't add another line online ("Please contact us to complete your order"). Tried different shipping/billing addresses, cards and names.

Is any MVNO still offering 60 day unlock? Or everyone switched to 365 days?
Spectrum is still 60 days, but you have to have Spectrum internet.

You have to activate it to be able to unlock it 365 days later.

As I recall there was a way to activate the sim via an email or on the website at purchase time or am I getting confused with another offer?

According to perplexity (which doesn't mean it's accurate): Yes — Metro SIMs can be activated online, and in some cases the activation email is the starting point for that flow. Metro's activation page says customers who had devices shipped to them should use the activation email they received, and that if the flow doesn't work they can activate through the website or call customer care.

In the shipping confirmation email there will be a hyperlinked word HERE that links to Check Order Status page, after displaying Order Status results the page will contain an activation link.

Interested in knowing if you can port a Google Voice number to this also. I just want it as a WIFI device for $55 but haven't figured out what to select to buy to do that
