I'm currently abroad, if I was to order this and can't get it activated in that first month of service, any idea if the phone would still unlock after 365 days?

AFAIK, activation is mandatory for the 365 days unlock cycle to kick in.

I would like to know that as well. Based on what I know Metro has the best unlock policy out of all now allowing for unlock without any addition payment/recharge after initial purchase. All others need paid service for minm 6 months (example cricket)

Yes but mint does not sell cheaper devices. Most of the good deals/discounts are only for devices combined with their one year plan service (additional $180 minm) AFAIK
