I have the DCF870B but it don't have anywhere near as much torque as this impact. Should I get this as well? Is it overkill for occasional home project like building a carport/deck/sunroom etc.?

You dont need this. Your 870 is powerful enough.
I missed the 3.5ah powerstack deal (oos).

I have the 870 Hydraulic Impact Driver and I really like how much control you have over the lower speeds. I have a drill driver and for driving in dry wall screws, the 870 is really great. It also can get screws that you might be screwing in at an angle but too close to the wall for the drill driver (e.g. think of a closet). Because of the ore control, it does not seem to run out and drive the screw well into the wall board (past the paper). This is my first real test of the 870 since picking it up from Fasteners during the black Friday specials. Unless you are really driving something into really hard wood, I do not think there is any reason the 870 should not handle it.

The DCF870 can handle most home projects including construction/framing. If you want something with more torque, you may want to think about a compact impact wrench such as the DCF921 (1/2") or DCF 923 (3/8"). They are better suited for things like lag bolts and lug nuts than the DCF860. An impact wrench in combination with the DCF870 would provide you much more versatility than owning a DCF860 and a DCF870 (which largely overlap with each other).

Agreed that this is great advice. That being said I believe the DCF931 is 3/8" impact wrench. Did you mean the DCF921?

Good advice. I'll hold out for a sales on an impact wrench.

Yes. I meant 921 and 923. Thanks. I edited to make the correction

This is perfectly stated and should be pinned somewhere.

Additionally, I bought and kept the DCF850 over the 860 awhile back as I felt the 860 was too snappy and fast for most home projects and the 850 was smoother but still with plenty of power for those jobs. And, like you said, use the 923 for bolt/nut work and a 900 for anything those can't handle.

I'm thinking I should get it just for the heck of it. Can't never have to many tools.

I loved my 850 and really never had a single complaint until I saw a YouTube video that convinced me that the M18 Gen4 was at least 0.8% better!
