I bought this router earlier this month when it was on sale for 190 new on amazon. I didn't want to believe the comments that the software was glitchy and the router would need resetting. Some users reported after updating to the last firmware it worked better so I decided to try it out and flash the custom firmware Merlin which works flawlessly on my AX86U Pro. Started having dropped connections and lag when trying to load a new page. Ended up returning it this past Monday since it was still in within the return window. I wouldn't buy this model for $50 if it went on sale for that price today.

Check the reviews, recent ones still say it has issues.

This is a good deal for a WiFi 7 router with VLAN capabilities. I have a much more expensive ASUS router, and recently- when I went to check for new firmware I got some notices that they want to capture and sell my personal data. I do not agree, and I bought and paid for my router almost a year ago. So, I am going to paste the first part of what one Amazon reviewer said about this BE9700: This is nice looking and solid built router and when on special deal good price for what it promises. but as far as delivering, well it falls way too short. 1st it's data collecting spyware software and if you don't agree to Asus terms of collecting your data, you 're not able to upgrade the firmware and so many other things will be disabled.
That's basically the warning ASUS gives you along with their ultimatum to take your personal data or not be able to fully use the router you bought. Now, well after I've paid over $300 for their product- they insist on taking what's mine.

I have two of these routers. Even though newer firmware has helped somewhat, the stability is not good. I frequently find that devices disconnect seemingly randomly. This is made even worse by the AI Mesh feature.

I would not purchase one of these routers.

For US, hold off on buying foreign made routers until there's clarity on the current ban on routers manufactured outside the US. Currently, if you buy this you can only expect to be able to update it until March 1st 2027. Source: https://www.fcc.gov/faqs-recent-u...-countries

Can newer routers accept the settings export from older routers to speed up configuration?

I've been a member of the SNB community for years and from what I've read, this model has more problems than any other Asus released. I currently use the AX-86U as primary and an AX-68U as the AP in a mesh system and both have been rock solid. Asus just released a firmware update for the AX-86U and its better than ever. WiFi 7 isn't supported by many devices and I personally see no need for tri-band Smilie

I buy asus router to run Merlin FW. I wonder if running Merlin Firmware fixes this data collecting issue you mentioned? 🤔
They're very mistaken about the data collection agreement.

It's only applicable to the OPTIONAL features that come with the router.

For instance, nearly all Asus routers come bundled with TrendMicro filtering for security and parental controls. These rely on lists that get retrieved from TrendMicro's servers. There's also some telemetry built in — likely so TrendMicro can gauge how many Asus customers are using the service.

You have to go out of your way to deliberately turn these features on. But before doing so, it makes you accept additional terms of agreement.

With that said, anyone who owns an Asus router and didn't have AsusWrt/Merlin ready to load as soon as it came out of the box should automatically be held with skepticism.

False.

WiFi 7 makes up the difference in dwellings where 6Ghz can't penetrate as well.

I can get the bandwidth I would with 6Ghz at 30FT all the way in my backyard with WiFi 7 on 5Ghz.

I had one it definitely has issues that I didn't think would be able to be fixed with firmware. That being said if the be86u ever comes on sale, I would buy that one.
My experience wasn't so much that it had "issues", as it appeared to have antenna design flaws with the effective range for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz being about half of the AC88U/AC3100, AX88U/AX6000 or BE88u/BE7200 router designs. So the BE92U got ebay'd within 2 days of installation.

At these prices it's still not worth getting. Who know what will happen since the FCC has banned the sale of all new models of home routers not made in the U.S. You'll have less than a year's worth of update support.

wifi 7 supports up to 320mhz on 6 ghz whereas 6e doesnt. just transferred a file at 260MB/s to my laptop over wifi with this be92u router. limited because the source computer is only 2.5gbe nic.

No issues - revision 6.1 manufacturers date 2025. Primary router in mesh connected to Asus ax88u pro. Dell Pro Workstation laptop connected wireless at 6G. Side note - running Merlin -wrt since I had that on my ax88u pro .

$218 new. Only a savings of $68 and only 90 days warranty versus 3 years new. The savings is not worth losing almost 3 years of support. I just bought a BE86U and have a AX86U and am not disappointed with it's speed and VPN capabilities. Didn't need tri-band.
The BE86U is a pretty router! Nice specs too. If you ever need 6ghz, could always buy a cheap Wireless Access Point & plug it into your network.

Here's a "hot take" that may be controversial: For those who don't need WiFi 7 (most people with internet service under 1 gigabit probably wouldn't benefit much from WiFi 7), you could save a ton of money by buying a used WiFi 5 router from eBay/Facebook Marketplace/Goodwill/etc. and putting 3rd party firmware on it (Fresh Tomato, DD-WRT, OpenWRT or ASUS WRT Merlin). Of course, check the supported router pages for the firmware you wish to use, to ensure the router you wish to buy is compatible with it.

Savings: $100+. For example a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 can be obtained for about $30 (sometimes less than that...). These 3rd party firmware offerings breathe new life into old hardware, which often still works perfectly fine, but are often relegated to the recycle bin as the manufacturer's firmware support ended years ago.

It's a trivial process to flash 3rd party firmware on most routers, and a bit of fun as well! And if you have a spare router in your closet, maybe it's compatible with one of the above 3rd party firmware offerings? It's a great way to add a cheap wireless access point to your network as well.
