I had the same issue, the trick is I bought 4 of them to set up a 5.1 system then we compromised and I kept 2

Buy now. Worry about it later.

Would these be better than some old Mission 773 towers?

A/B testing often works. I set up my 5.1 surround system, after a week my partner did not like the look so I said I would take them down. The next night watching TV the first question was, "Why does the TV sound so bad?" We had a short conversation about audio quality and speaker tradeoffs. The 5.1 surround system went back up and there was a new shared appreciation for good sound born in our household.

A 2.0 channel system would likely have the same effect. You can't unhear the quality difference between a set of speakers like Kef Q1s and whatever sound bar or other base line speaker setup is in place. I replaced my parent's sound bar subwoofer combo with a pair of Q150s. My dad, who has some hearing loss from years of power tool usage, immediately said, "Wow, the voices are so much clearer." He asked about the lack of a subwoofer, I ran a bass sweep on the Q150s and his jaw dropped to the floor. He couldn't believe they could produce the level of bass they can for their size.

Another good approach is to have your partner pick their favorite playlist to play through them first.

Kef makes spectacular speakers for the price. They're a great product even if they feel expensive up front. You can often score a pair open box discount at Crutchfield or refurbished at Accessories4Less.

I agree that KEF does make some excellent speakers, but their "sale" prices are actually closer to their true-market value relative to good speaker brands NOT sold at Best Buy. These Q1 Metas are on par with $400/pr Ascend 170SE or 200SE2, ELAC B53, Wharfedale Diamond 12.1, etc. At their regular $600/pr pricing though they are definitely overpriced.

You will probably want a sub to make up for the lost bass.

Yeah. Been $399 at Crutchfield and Best Buy forever.

Places with actual customer service.

I agree, hence the recommendation to find them with an open box discount.

Anyone know how these compare to the $500 ones at Costco?

These will need amplification of some kinda but can be driven by a Class D amp pretty easily. Like an Aiyama A07. But that will be an extra expense on top of the speakers. Or hit up a garage sale and pick up a used receiver on the cheap.

The Q1 Meta should have a little bit more mid-bass extension, but overall they will sound fairly similar. Main advantage of doing the Q1 with mini-amp vs LSX is that it'd be cheap and easy to replace the mini-amp when it inevitably dies on you, but not when the internal amp of powered speakers go out on you.

Would be best to do a mini-amp like this which has a high pass filter if you want to add a small sub, which will make the biggest audible difference: https://a.co/d/08gFPmoR
