Film Details:
  • Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science fiction, Spielbergian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template - and the high-water mark - with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium.
  • Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days, 06 hours, 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank's maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum.
  • Described by its director as "The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick", Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast - pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katharine Ross, and television favorite Noah Wyle - and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran.
  • This 4K restoration by Arrow Films allows a modern classic to receive the home video treatment it deserves

So it's theatrical and directors cut both?

Yeah lol S Darko is about as much of a "masterpiece" as American psycho 2 (direct to video btw)

28 days... 6 hours... 42 minutes... 12 seconds. That... is when the world... will end.

This is probably the only movie where I think the theatrical cut is clearly the definitive version. The director's cut tries to explain more, but doesn't do a very good job. And they make some bad changes to the music.

This is one of those movies they didn't know how to market. They made it seem creepy. If anything it's sci fi. Definitely a great movie that leaves you with lots of pondering.

The echo and bunny men opening is outstanding but I prefer the theatrical movie.

DD is the kind of movie that can be a coin flip - lots of people love it, and some people just find it unwatchable or annoying (usually if they don't like the vibe or the type of movie... kind of spooky, surrealish, introspective, sci-fi-esque and a bit confusing). If you like a movie you can walk away with thinking about, or even still puzzling out a bit it's probably for you. (Also IMO it's worth watching at least once just to have seen a fairly iconic ~cult classic.)

Also wanted to agree with everyone saying the theatrical is better. It's certainly the one to watch first - the director's cut isn't just expanded it kinda rearchitects things in a way. I think it's worth watching both (ehhhhh) but you would imo miss out on a lot of what makes this movie great starting with the director cut.

It's also a pretty solid movie to own - the first several watch-thrus are entertaining (at least personally I noticed small things or connections as I rewatched). It's also a pretty clutch halloween pick.
