So, without any other OS and / security updates, we are at the whims of the hackers?

Boils down to risk profile.

I would pass on this one due to no 5G. By the end of this year most US carriers will be 5G-first in network articulation.

Exactly why buying cheap Android tablets does not end up being cheaper. This tablet stopped receiving updates 2 years after it was released.
The base model iPad released the same year is on the current version of iOS and still receiving updates.

Doesn't seem like a good deal unless for some pretty specific use cases...

Updates are overrated. Android 13 is fine.

Yes, unless you're doing something really stupid a tablet doesn't need them. If you use this for banking or keeping your personal stuff on that is a YOU issue. This is an offline maps, hiking trails, art, movies, youtube or netflix browsing device. You're only at risk of "hackers" if you're an idiot, said as someone who was certified back when it was still called backtrack and we paid to be certified in an os lmao.
Make a new email on the device and don't log into your accounts aside from like netflix. It's android just download mobilism's app and install from there, and there's a chance it's rootable to install a better rom anyway which is a great way to extend older hardware

Yup. I use these (offline) on my motorcycle. Mostly in the woods, but also on roads when I have to ride those, to see where I am via the GPS and on-board maps and decide where I might want to go from there. No cell service needed (or wanted). These are rugged. I had one come off the bike at 10mph in rocks before I made a better mount for it. This tablet was fine after it's trauma (minus some scratches on the screen protector).
