See photo of NSF Standard #2 (American National Standard For Food Handling Equipment) marking on the bucket.

Per NSF:

"NSF/ANSI 2-2025 covers the minimum food protection and sanitation requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, construction, and performance of food handling equipment. Such equipment includes bakery, cafeteria, kitchen, and pantry units and other handling and processing equipment like tables and components, counters, tableware, hoods, shelves, and sinks, among others.

Considerations in play here include the smoothness of angles and corners in a food zone, the usage of fasteners, latches, hinges, and the cleanability of various components for sanitation. These concerns, as well as many others, are outlined in the NSF/ANSI 2-2025 standard."

The best lid for these buckets is Home Depot LD5GRLBK006. You can buy just one or economize and go for the 576-pack.

It's a two piece screw top lid. Food safe like the bucket.

And if you think the outer ring doesn't fit on the bucket, you are wrong and you need to start gripstrengthmaxxing. It fits.

Good for growing vegetables but they don't appear to be food grade. Just bought a 4 pack from Walmart for $14.00 that is food grade. Interesting this popped up now.

Clever idea but $13 feels like highway robbery.
Props to @jdhalbert for the Home Depot LD5GRLBK006 recommendation. Much cheaper and listed as food safe HDPE.

Good deal, but check Marketplace. You may have local food producers that sell food safe buckets with lids for $1 to $3
Near unlimited pails from baker section. Sams too. They get frosting in them with lids and are vanilla scented. Butcher shops usually have too in both round and rectangular.

This is about the best price you'll find on these buckets. I've been doing research on these 5 gallon buckets, wanting them food grade for food storage. Home depot and Lowe's are about $6 for each bucket, for a basic, 70 mil thickness bucket. Many other makers make a 90 mil thickness, but can be considerably more expensive. The gamma lids, which screw on, claim to be air tight. So, if you're storing food, look for a gamma lid for a 5 gallon bucket. Even if you're not storing food, the screw on lid is easier to deal with. The lids are always more money than the buckets, FYI.

Home Depot and Lowe's sell 5 gal bucket snap on lids for 5 gal buckets. I don't know if this lid is food safe. They also sell a lid that is a seat. They used to sell the Gamma lid but looking at the HD site they seem to be selling a very similar lid for much less than the Gamma lid posted above and it is food grade. Firehouse subs sell the buckets that their pickles come in and a portion (or all) of the money is donated. When I last purchased one they were very sturdy. There is lots of info available on how to get the pixel smell out of them.

Interesting, I've only seen them at business center, not at regular Costco in my area.
