This Falcon 5W diode laser looks like a solid starter engraver for wood, opaque plastics, painted metal, and other flat materials. The community notes it can remove paint from metal tags, mark stainless steel by discoloring or coating removal, and handle simple projects like labels and small signs. Setup often needs extras such as eye protection, ventilation, a honeycomb bed, and air assist, and LightBurn is repeatedly favored over the included software. The main limit is power, since 5W is too weak for true metal engraving or cutting and curved surfaces are harder. A practical pick if you want to learn laser engraving without jumping to a higher power machine.

Common Questions (5)

  • LightBurn is not required, but it is widely preferred because the included software is described as harder to use. The free trial has no feature lockout beyond usage time, and a full license may need to be budgeted separately.

  • It will not etch chrome or most metals directly. It can discolor or remove paint/coating on painted metal, and metal-marking sprays like CerMark may help, but 5W 455nm diode lasers still struggle with true metal engraving.

  • It is best suited for wood, opaque polymers, thin cork, thin wood, slate, and similar materials. Flat polymer surfaces are workable, but curved parts are difficult, and 5W power is limited for heavier cutting jobs.

  • Yes, CFNY10 or CFNY8 can stack with WELCOME5, and shoppers reported prices like $79.05, $89.10, and $170 before tax on the 10W version. A separate 10% code may cancel out when combined with another 10% coupon.

  • It can blind you, start fires, and produce harmful fumes from unsafe materials like PVC, so it should be attended or placed in a safe burn-down area. Eye protection, an enclosure, and proper ventilation are strongly recommended, and certified laser safety glasses are preferred over the included cheap pair.

I'm not preaching, but this is a serious tool. Don't take it lightly. It will blind you and depending on the materials you put under it, it can damage your lungs. Especially if you put PVC or like materials under it. It will catch paper, wood or other materials on fire.

I have a couple and do small projects with them. This one will not etch metal, but it will etch the paint off painted metal. It should be able to burn designs into wood.

Most people upgrade the software to LightBurn. (I don't know what software it comes with. I have an Atomstack)
It costs the same as the engraver unit, but it's not necessary.

Really would like to know how it would work to engage on chrome metal tools, like wrenches. I do realize it's quite underpowered but if it's able to engrave a letter per minute, I'd be satisfied

It will not etch chrome directly. You would need a spray like CerMark. The laser then bonds it to the metal. CerMark and the other sprays are $25+ a can.

That said, CerMark states that 455nm 5w diode lasers do struggle with this task. So, YMMV

There is a lot to consider when purchasing one of these. They can and will start fires so they have to be either attended 100% or put somewhere they can burn down safely. You will need to buy an enclosure or if you plan to use any included safety glasses you need to make sure the laser engraver is somewhere that no other humans or pets are going to accidentally walk in to because one of these can blind anything with an eyeball quick fast and in a hurry. You also need to research what materials are safe to engrave because some things emit toxic gasses when burned ! with a 5w laser this will take a long long time to burn a project increasing the chances you will leave it unattended, I would suggest buying one with a higher power laser! Personally if planning on using laser glasses I would spend the money and get some proper certified laser safety glasses and not trust my eyesight to the 3$ pair of glasses that come included ! Also these don't usually come with software so plan on spending more to buy a Lightburn license!

The video shows it engraving on metal, small thin sheet, cat tag "Dog tag" Or are they misrepresenting their product? 🤔
It can remove the paint/coating on a metal tag.

This is a diode laser. The wavelength is not suitable for metals at all, even when used with a 60-100W module. Diode lasers are good for wood or opaque polymers (Need CO2 for clear ones). To engrave or cut metals you need a Fiber or UV laser.
Have the 40w falcon 2 pro at work model at work, it can actually cut through very thin stainless steel (5mils or less). It can engrave aluminum as long as you have laser spray and can engrave straight onto stainless steel

Likely they're not misrepresenting. The thin sheet and tags would be a soft aluminum which is do-able.

coupon codes stack. i tried adding the 10% coupon code listed above, but it negated when trying to stack with the 10% off one.
