Are we talking about Nikon factory refurbs, because I've never seen anyone get one with more than a few thousand clicks, and in as new condition. What you're describing sounds more like 3rd party "refurb" or just plain used cameras.

looking more into this the Z6iii is the better camera. With the DX crop I can get that extra range and it should still be at a higher MP than the z50ii.. Better in low light, battery, sps, etc..
Z6III in DX crop mode will be 9 MP vs 21 MP for the Z50II. There's really no reason to use crop mode on a full frame Z camera unless you're having trouble seeing your subject cause it's too far away, and if so the picture will probably suck anyway. Just use full frame and crop in post.

Z6III isn't going to be much better in low light - remember that on the Z6III you'll likely have to crop, and then you'll lose the noise benefit of the larger sensor. Same story with lenses - a faster lens that is shorter focal length - if you start cropping you lose the noise benefit of the faster lens.

I think the Z6III is a good match to the 180-600, whereas the Z50II is better suited to a 400mm lens - 600mm is really long on a crop camera, and 270mm equivalent on the short end means you'll miss shots of subjects close to you, or bigger subjects, or if you want a wider angle to show the animal's environment.

So Z6III + 180-600 or Z50II + Nikon 100-400 or Tamron 50-400 would be ideal, imo.

If there's any chance you'll be able to afford an upgrade to a Z8 in the future, I'd get the Z50II now - I think the jump from Z50II to Z6III is smaller than the jump from Z6III to Z8 - the latter's 45 MP and 120Hz, lag/blackout-free viewfinder is really awesome for wildlife/birds.

For reference I'm currently using a D3300 and sigma 100-400 contemporary. I do wish I had more reach than my current effective 600 range, as I'm doing a good bit of cropping in PL9 with my shots now.
Z6III isn't going to help at all with that issue - I think the Z50II and 180-600 is your best bet - that'll give you a Z8 level of pixels on your subjects.

It's worth noting that the Z50 II (and all Nikon's APS-C cameras) don't have in body stabilization. It's less of an issue with Nikon's own VR zooms, but if you're shooting primes, especially in low light, the DX line is a hard sell.

Very tempting. I shot F mount for a long time and know Nikon's ergonomics well. Want to stay with Nikon. Don't plan on using much of my old glass so any mirrorless system could work. I mostly am interested in third party lenses like Sigma, though. Nikon hasn't opened up enough for AF third party lenses. It's a dilemma.

Rumor has it that we might see a Z8II this year. That would likely mean some steep discounts on the Z8. Just something to consider. After buying my daughter a Z5II and using it a bit (love it!), I have an itch.... so I'll be watching closely.

Great deal. Got my Z6iii refurb through Nikon last November for $1,511.96, so it is possible to go lower, but that sale went so fast, the person who posted on SD got thumbs down'd because I'm pretty sure the only person who was able to snag one was me and maybe the OP. 🤣

For the camera enthusiasts out there, what is the single most well rounded lens that you'd recommend for this? What about carrying case?
Is there a different brand or ecosystem that you'd recommend over this for the price?

Nikon 24-120 f/4 S was on the refurb site the other day- now it's gone. It's very good for what it is.
Also the 40mm f/2 Z was $143 refurb. I know you said well rounded, but man that price was a steal for a spiritual nifty fifty. Probably why it sold out. I have one, and I use it all the time when I don't want to lug around my heavy primes or zooms.

A bit higher end
Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 S is available refurb, I got one during the last sale and it's excellent
And speaking of primes, they do have their 50mm f/1.8 refurb avaiable which is very good. Don't let that 1.8 fool you, it's better than their 1.4, and while not as good in absolute terms as their 1.2, it's still great.

50mm f1.8, IMO
Depends on what you do, but IMO if you're starting out, the 50mm f1.8 will always have a place in your bag, and I think NOT having the zoom flexibility starting out can help you develop your creativity, and will also provide guidance on where you want to go next.
