Unless you're doing very high file size transfers all the time a 20Gbps drive at most would be fine. A 40 Gigabyte video file would take roughly 16 seconds in a 20Gbps enclosure vs 8 seconds in a 40 Gbps, and that's only if you can hit the theoretical max speed in either, and the device you plug these into can support that speed.
Price isn't special either, there's other no name brands on ebay for the same price or less.

There's a $16 Ugreen on Amazon today that I would think could do all that fine.
There are other USB 4 enclosures with ASM2464PD controllers on Amazon for ~$40 though, with similar performance. Next step down would be the much older TB3 enclosures with Intel JHL7440 controllers that were relabeled as TB4/USB4 compatible. These max out around 2900MB/S whereas the Asmedia controllers can hit closer to the full 40gbps.
My newer USB4 laptops and my older TB3 Dell XPS 15 9570 had no issues with the Asmedia controller but my older 2021 TB4 desktop hates anything that isn't an Intel controller, so just make sure your devices and cables work properly with it. My cables and devices are all over the place with compatibility and performance with these things.
Also keep in mind that the blower fan makes these enclosures very long.

I bought a Dell Pro Max Premium with 2x TB-4 and 2x TB-5 ports (total of 4 ports) in September of 2025. That was 8+ months ago, and they were available for a while before I purchased it.....
PS - all ports are power and data..

Even with top-tier NVMes, the bandwidth for random access is under 100 MB/s, so the transfer speed is not the bottleneck. You don't really gain anything by upgrading from 10 Gbps to 40 Gbps for this specific use case. If you feel any improvement, it's likely due to moving from an enclosure without a tunneling protocol to one that supports it.
For the need of random access, a high-quality 10 Gbps/USB 3.2 Gen2 enclosure with UASP can perform 90% as well as tunneling in terms of responsiveness, but with much less heat generation, better device longevity, a smaller footprint, and no need for fan noise or dust management, and a much lower cost. Unless you absolutely need that extra 10% of performance, the marginal gain in random access does not typically justify upgrading from a 10 Gbps enclosure to a 40 Gbps one.
If you constantly need to transfer large files then it's a different story. 40 Gbps transfers data 3-4 times the speed of 10 Gbps (before the cache runs out) so the upgrade makes much more sense in that case.
These are getting cheap because of known teething issues that prolonged through COVID.
Battle test during the return period. If it works, great. Make sure.
