There's no point in buying a sub if your budget is only $500.
You shouldn't be able to "hear" a properly set up subwoofer as it should only handle frequencies below 50 Hz, and it rarely produces any sound. Might as well spend all that money on the passive stereo speakers themselves and an amp.
You will hear the sub alot (but hopefully not localize it)and would definitely fill in the sound. These have very limited useful output below about 70hrz. At low volumes or at a desktop you might be good with 2.0. or as in my case I just wanted better TV sound so these did that.
The concentric design help for TV use as well since if you lay down or sit bolt upright sometimes you get good vertical evenness.
These are physically very small by hifi standards so convenient where other options are not. They have great sound for their size and convenience factor.
I think these are worth the $500 and at the same time they will disappoint folks if expectations are too high.
They are not unbelievably good or something along that line and do require a subwoofer in order to provide what some users are really looking for. Even then they are not going to fill large spaces with big sounds. These are tiny hifi speakers.

Yep, that's my point. The KEF LSX II is a pair of stereo speakers so I'd assume it's for music listening rather than home theater. In that case, it's better to spend the extra $300-400 on a better pair of speakers and amp instead of buying a subwoofer that only produces sound 1% of the time.
