how sketchy are these cheaper ones? between the $100-300 range they all look the same with minor features changes. I'm worried about the stress on the hitch itself from a flimsy carrier. anyone have any experience?

No clue, I'm wondering the same.
For my peace of mind, I just rent the U-Haul motorcycle trailer whenever I need to take my motorcycle somewhere. Yet it would be nice to not have to travel somewhere and go through a check-in/check-out process just to take my motorcycle to different places.

I don't like this design but if your load for the hitch and carrier are well within spec, YMMV (you'll be fine??).
The one I use looks similar BUT the ramp storage is on the outside and not between the bike/car so the bike is closer to the car (less lever action). I use it for light weight dirt bikes 450/350 which are under 250lb. The only reason I would want the carrier on the inside is if I wanted more room between the bike and car but I don't. Buy quality straps and make sure the straps can't unhook from the carrier. I'd use the ones that come with it as a second backup strap.
edit: someone loaded a Royal Enfield Himalayan onto this and noted the ramp was too short.
changed "you'll be fine" to YMMV. hehe

The hitch accept up to 1500lbs, depending on your Truck.
Hitch "receiver" has SAE test for weight and usually manufacturers report the max weight allowed.
Safest value is 10% of towing capacity. It is mostly higher but good rule of thumb.

I have the Harbor Freight version of these motorcycle carriers and hundreds of folks including myself are happy with it. The major flaw i see in this one is the weird grate design they have instead of a solid steel plate for the bike to sit on. That is going to make loading/unloading very difficult. With the HF version, i just installed no-skid on the steel and i can just drive the bike right up on its own power, and use the front brake to lower it down, this won't be possible if its a grate.

And for weight, any SUV or truck with Class III or higher should be fine. My 22 year old GMC has a Class IV and barely flexes with a 400lb bike on it.

Ratchet straps, if you just wanting a rack to transport bicycles, a platform rack such as the 1UP is much easier where you can carry 1-4 bikes depending on what you need.
