I've got a remodel planned for like 2-3 years down the road, but last I checked, for residential stuff, does anything above Cat6 matter? local fiber co is pushing 2gb and even up to 7gb options so wondering if its worth the upgrade beyond cat6.

Ran Ethernet throughout my house about two years ago and I went with CM-rated Cat6 through the walls. Cat6A was much more expensive at the time and you need specialized tools to terminate anything beyond Cat6A.

Technically speaking, Cat5e can still do 10Gbps if the run is short enough and there's little/no interference. My current longest run is 50'/15.25m, so even if I ran Cat5e, I'd still be able to do multi-gig without issue. I currently have 2G/1G through Metronet/T-Fiber and speeds are as advertised.

Network equipment, for those curious:
  1. NicGiga 8-port 2.5G POE+ switch w/2x 10G SFP
  2. 1x TP-Link Omada EAP670
  3. 1x TP-Link Omada EAP725-Wall
  4. 2x TP-Link Omada EAP655-Wall

Wired clients max out the connection speed. Wireless clients average about 500+ both directions.
