Saw this pricing earlier; I'd jump on this but I found an open box at Micro Center for 238 or something a little while ago. Probably not many left in the channel.

Totally different kind of chip. Half the cores and extra cache for gaming performance -it will perform far below the 5900xt for editing, compiling, server-hosting, and any and all productivity workloads with the exception of maybe Photoshop.

All that said I think the 5900XT is worth $200 at best. It gets absolutely crushed but the 265k which was discounted at around $250 last I checked, and DDR4 is still around $250 per 32GB on average vs the $350 per 32GB for DDR5 -there are savings, but not enough to pay more for a substantially worse CPU in my opinion.

I have a 5950X that I use for gaming and with a good amount of encoding and CAD. Paired with a 9070 XT there is some CPU bound situations in modern games but far less so than when I bought it. Almost all CPU bound situations occur when rendering at 1440P or lower and upscaling with FSR. At 4K the CPU barely gets touched.

Most new games are using cores like they are going out of style. Arc Raiders routinely uses 60% of the CPU and that's including SMT threads.
