What does a NAS offer, that this does not?

You can access a NAS over the network. As the name implies network attached storage... this just connects to a single computer over USB

Got it. Thanks! Wonder if it can be plugged into the USB port of a router for networking.

This requires a system to access it. Either a computer or USB port on a router. If on the router, you can't do media servers for most routers.

The NAS is standalone, and can support 10Gig over network connections, and all sorts of software to access the data on the drives.

I'm sure someone with more experience with them can expound further.

Easy distinction

DAS = Directly attached storage (this)
NAS = Network attached storage

It can, but it will be bottlenecked by the USB connection.

I have a similar device that can do both esata and USB 3. ESATA gave me problems so I've left it in USB mode.
