Wonder if future deals will be better with the standard price lowering.

Remember when a month was $4?

I think it's absolutely nuts that they dropped the price from $30 to $22 by only removing call of duty. Do the math.

$8 x 12 = $96.

They were effectively charging you $96 to rent call of duty.

It's $17.59 on Loaded right now for the USA region, unstackable key. Good if you're currently un-subbed and just want 1 month.

Asking the experts. Will this plan of mine work: A) Let my current subscription GamePass Ultimate lapse later next month. B)Enter in 2x 12 month codes for GamePass Essential from a prior deal. C) Apply one of THESE 1 month Game Pass Ultimate codes, and BAM ... 1 mo. + 9.6(?) mo. of Game Pass Ultimate. Thoughts?

It's not just call of duty, they made an insanely greedy play. I don't know if they just needed some immediate profits to look good by end of quarter or what, but they absolutely didn't need to charge that much. I mean... the price has been lowered and the latest Call of Duty is still on there (just future ones won't be) so it wasn't solely that cost.
And yes, I also remember when it was less than $4 with the conversion. It actually ended a month ago today for me. I do miss it but in that 3 years I had it my list of non gamepass games has grown a lot and I'm happy focusing on that for a while, at least until Fable comes out.

It really comes down to one thing: gamepass, for what it offers, is unsustainable.

Game development is incredibly expensive, time consuming, and a huge risk.

These huge companies want all their games to be massive live service games and wants everyone to play all the time and run their credit up to the max.

You CAN'T expect people to pay for gamepass and then BUY the game that's on gamepass. It's sheer stupidity. They have come to realize that they have reached the maximum number of gamepass subscribers and the growth pretty much stopped. So they think they lost these call of duty sales but they never had them in the first place, all that money was just siphoned into gamepass.

My theory was that Phil Spencer jacked the price up because his leaders told him too and that he was done with. Asha could then swoop in, lower it, and gain some good will, which is what she did. He destroyed his reputation so she would have a chance. and the price is still higher than what it once was.

Microsoft doesn't care at all about xbox gaming. It's a drop in the bucket for them. But right now, their reputation in all fronts is in shambles and if they don't course correct, once people abandon them, they will never return.

they will continue to raise the price because that's what happens when innovation dies and stock price must go up. they will raise prices, get rid of employees, or close down studios. they will never cut their own pay. they will get rid of all day ones so they can increase sales numbers and then introduce a new $50/m subscription with day ones.

Original (not discounted) price is incorrect. Price was dropped a week ago to 22.99 not $29.99

What's nuts is that they managed to raise the price $10 in October (from $20/month (with call of duty) to $30/month (with call of duty)), then 6 months later remove call of duty and drop the price $7 and make people feel like they're getting a deal out of it. Really, it's a +$3 increase to the price and removal of one of the bigger franchises.. which Microsoft owns

$23 is an amazing deal for what you get compared to the price of streaming TV. I'm Gen X and I too miss the good ole days, but game is an incredible deal when you compare it to other forms of entertainment honestly

Indeed. I stacked 3 years at $4-5 /month. Got about 18 months left, but I don't see myself renewing at $20+ per month.

That said, Game Pass provides a tremendous amount more value than the typical $20/month streaming service like Netflix.

Gamepass Ultimate is unsustainable, but Premium is still a pretty amazing deal at $15. Xbox set the bar pretty high and shot themselves in the foot by having it come out the gate so cheap... I get it was to get subscribers but man, $15 for ultimate was not sustainable and handing out 1 or 3 month subs for a dollar (I got 3 years at less than $4 a month). People have it in their minds its Ultimate or bust, but Gamepass Premium still has a much better game collection than PS+ extra for a similar price. You lose out on day 1 games but you didn't have that with any competitor anyway. I was so far behind on my Gamepass queue I would have very little issue missing out on day one games.
"You CAN'T expect people to pay for gamepass and then BUY the game that's on gamepass. It's sheer stupidity."
Thank you!!!!!!
Man, the number of people who downvoted me on Reddit because I said I didn't need to buy a game since I beat it on gamepass was bonkers. Like, they expected me to use gamepass as a way to try games and then buy them if I like them. They equated me just playing the game on gamepass and enjoying it and not buying it to piracy, which is just, as you put it, sheer stupidity. It was mostly games people fanboy over, like Expedition 33 or Diablo 4.
Although I wouldn't say the growth has stopped, with raising the prices like this they proved they were untrustworthy, but had they not made the Activision/Blizzard acquisition they would have had a lot more money for other stuff. It would have helped if Call of Duty 7 would have been amazing and brought in players, but it wasn't and didn't. However, they had an INSANE first half of last year with banger after banger each month for day one games, including the HUGE game of the year, which was a (semi) indy game and quite a punt. I assure you they increased subs then, but again, jacking up the price so insanely hard ruined that.
I don't think Phil Spencer really destroyed his reputation, people know it's not all on him, and the VAST majority of gamers aren't following that closely to know who that is. I think with the execs as a whole they had profits tied to quarterly bonuses and they found that increasing the price to $30 people may forget to unsub for a month and that would get them to their quarterly goals. It's not uncommon that leadership would do something foolish long term to attempt short term profits.
