You can currently get this from Canon's refurbished site for $400: https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/...efurbished

One lens for $329: https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/...efurbished

Body only $279: https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/...-r100-body

With that said, $750 is outrageously expensive for what little you're getting. That's a hard no from me.

Even $400 for the three-piece set is a bit outrageous.

It's not a great camera. This is the bare-bones entry-level model. It doesn't have a touch screen, so it's a poor choice for those moving up from a mobile telephone camera. It doesn't have two mode dials, so it's a poor choice for those wanting to learn photography/exposure/manual controls. The video is nigh useless on it with terrible rolling shutter. And the photo on it? Well, it's not terrible. Comparatively, it's not amazing.

And the kit lenses are about as flim-flam quality as you can get.

The only two things "good" about this camera is that it's a modern canon RF mount that hits a price point -- and that it's small + lightweight. But you can get cheaper cameras, smaller cameras, and more lightweight cameras than this. Or...maybe if they're nearly the same, you're getting far better performance for the weight/cost.

-------

If you have a budget of $750, you can quite a few very good options that far beat this entry-level... thing.

Canon's own R50 (a major step up) is $450 (https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/...efurbished).

If you don't mind going a bit older, you can get Olympus Micro 4/3rds -- the Olympus EM-1 Mark II can be had for roughly $400 + Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 lens for ~$400 (24-80mm full frame equivalent). This is an absolute pro-tier setup which will yield amazingly stellar results compared to the plastik-not-so-fantastik R100.

I'm sure there are Sony and Nikon equivalents, but I'm unfamiliar with much of those mirrorless systems so I'll leave that as an exercise for others to figure out.

I agree that $750 is way too much for this kit.
If someone really wants this R100 kit, try to catch it in stock refurbished straight from Canon for $400.
I bought my wife a refurbished R50 with the kit lens for $479 sometime last year. It looked and felt like it was new. Well worth the step up, even with that kit lens.
If you can catch it in stock, the R50 with kit lens is $499.

It is a terrible kit and body. It makes a great gift or if you want to see if you could be into photography.

Just be aware that if you have been a chronic sufferer of G.A.S (gear acquisition syndrome) then you would want to upgrade almost right away.

Long time Canon photographer here. Also with a young teen getting into photography. Get a Canon 40D. It's a higher end camera than the T6. Excellent photos, more features, professional build quality. Takes Canon EF lenses which are better value than RF lenses at the moment. $100 excellent condition with warranty at KEH. Ah, I see Canon has a refurbished T7 with two lenses for $320. Also good value. But the 40D is a bit step up.

My son (18) says he was recommended the M50 Mark II, I think - thoughts? He is doing photos for college events and planning to take some classes, and is a marketing major. I'd rather spend a little more for a camera he'd use longer if there is another.

I would not invest in canon m series. As they discontinued it. R series if canon. Z if nikon. Sony A7 lineup. A7iii and up. Lumix s5ii, iix. Fuji xt5, xt30.
Do *not* get m series!

I recently purchased the T7 from Canon's refurbished! As a former T2i owner, I must say that the Rebel series is a solid choice.
Considering the price of this particular deal, I wouldn't recommend getting the R100, so a T7 should honestly be a good camera for a while.
