This receiver is 5 years old. Has the technology not improved since then? Why would anyone purchase new such an antique unit @ $250+? Honest question as wouldn't there be some far new and improved in 2026?

Yes and no.
Car Audio is notorious for being slow to implement new tech. Most companies keep the same make and models for a few years (2-5) until they refresh tech/designs.
That being said, this absoloutely has hold tech in it. Most people don't know any better, but it's going to have older Bluetooth version 4.1 that is slower and less stable connection.
requires a wired connection for CarPlay and Android Auto. Might as well get this for Grandma and Grandpa because that's a deal breaker.

Yeah wireless Android Auto would be a minimum requirement for me.

Anyone know if this unit is a good option?

Also, will BestBuy do a good job in installation?

I'm looking for a unit around $300 sold by BestBuy because they offer installation

You can get a USB adapter for wireless Android Auto and CarPlay - most of them work quite well and the radio has a USB port on the back side so you can plug it in there and it will be out of sight.

if you already own this unit and its installed in your car I guess that's an ok solution if you don't want to install a new stereo.
But if you're in the market for a new stereo and its going to be installed, then there are much better options with built in CarPlay and android auto built-into the stereo touch screen interface.
I own the 8" Dual Carplay touchscreen multimedia stereo from O'reilley's its an excellent stereo with a volume knob and its only $265.
Advance auto and Walmart sell the 10" version for ~$220

It pisses me off that these big name brand companies aren't keeping up with innovation in this space as well as no name android head units made in china and sold on eBay and Amazon are. When you can get a fitted head unit that looks like it's built into the original dashboard for sub $200, and just the unit for a comparable wireless Android Auto don't is literally $600 plus the install kit for an extra $400, it's a no brainer.

Android based head units are absolute trash. Unsupported trash that will never get updated after they release their 50th model for the month.
As an ex-phone tinkerer. Nobody needs that shit on their car.
