For anyone else who had no idea what this was for - this is used to let the steam escape from the pie filling to prevent boil over.
I cook a ton and had no idea this was a thing.

I looked it up too but doesn't it leave a big hole in the middle of the pie?

They're usually used when you're not attempting latticework on your pie. Though with the appropriate slits, you can accomplish pretty much the same thing. I find they're mostly decorative at this point - usually you leave it in when cutting the pie
