The short answer: AC designed to cool. Dehumidifier designed to remove moisture.
AC are designed to cool not remove moisture, so dehumidifier will be more energy efficient than running an AC if you are trying to removing a lot of moisture. Removing a little of of moisture, the AC will do that as a side effect.
Running an AC, as a side-effect, will dehumidify the cooling area HOWEVER, it will not be same as running a dehumidifier. Once the desired temperature has been reached, the AC stops running even if the RH hasn't been reached. Depending on the current and desired RH, you could set the temp to lowest which probably runs the AC 24/7 in Florida and never reach the desired RH...
Running a dehumidifier is basically running an AC until the desired RH is reached. However, because the exhaust in the same room, the room will be warm ... 80 F?
Some AC have a dehumidifier, where it will run the AC in a slightly different mode to try and remove more moisture but still not as efficient.
